These are lawsuits over debts, evictions, car accidents, unlawful towing, and property issues. Most JP’s perform marriage ceremonies as well.

Judge O'Brien has served our community on the bench in The People's Court since being elected in 2018. Under her leadership, the court cleared a significant backlog left by her predecessor and turned the court into one of the busiest in Dallas County. Dallas County has five Justice of the Peace districts, with each district electing two JPs and one Constable. Precinct 2 consists of Balch Springs, far East Dallas, Garland, Mesquite, Rowlett, Sachse, and Sunnyvale. Justices of the Peace have jurisdiction over small civil claims cases of up to $20,000, such as contact disputes, insurance claims, car or home repair disputes, as well as other civil cases like debt... The court also handles minor criminal cases that are class C misdemeanor and below, including traffic tickets.
Additionally, JP's also may issue mental warrants, occupational driver's license, and conduct marriage ceremonies. Judge O'Brien upholds the law and fairness by ensuring everyone is given their chance in the courtroom. Judge O'Brien provides resources to legal assistance, representation, and financial assurances for renters. Judge O'Brien is committed to family and community safety by issuing mental health warrants. Justice of the Peace Courts have original jurisdiction in criminal cases where the fine does not exceed $500, and civil matters when the amount in controversy does not exceed $10,000. A Justice of the Peace may issue warrants of search and arrest, conduct preliminary hearings, and perform marriages.
Any justice precinct that includes a city of 8,000 or more residents may elect one additional Justice of the Peace. Each Justice Court in Dallas County is headed by a judge who is elected to a four-year term. Dallas County has ten elected justices of the peace, each presiding over their respective precincts within Dallas County.
