Kathleen Knight Abowitz, Ph.D., is a scholar of democracy, citizenship, and community in K-16 educational environments. Her research uses moral and political theories to address questions of “the public” of public schools and higher education. Her publications span several strands within these interests. The first explores political theories relevant for public educational governance; the second explores conceptions of citizenship that have shaped citizenship education, particularly in U.S. schools; the third strand focuses on questions of ethics in public leadership. She is past president of the John Dewey Society and the Ohio Valley Philosophy of Education Society, and a member of the Scholar Strategy Network (SSN).

A strong advocate for public education, Kathleen served on her Ohio district’s School Board from 2019 to 2023 and helped create the Ohio Public School Advocacy Network in 2017. Knight-Abowitz is a philosopher of education who conducts pragmatist-oriented inquiry into topics related to democratic aims and purposes of P-16 education. Knight-Abowitz utilizes political and moral theories to address questions around the "public" of public schools and public higher education.

Knight-Abowitz is interested in how P-20 schools/colleges teach young people democratic citizenship; and how we help them develop as civic leaders. Knight-Abowitz is also interested in how educators and activists can shift the discourses in the US on public schooling towards ethical and democratic ends and away from purely individualist; market-based purposes. Knight-Abowitz conducts both conceptual studies; using philosophical argumentation methods; as well as empirically-informed philosophical research. I am a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, focusing on educational philosophy and foundations since 1995 at Miami University in Oxford, OH.
