Lab Tutorials Comp70091 Introduction To Machine Learning
These lab tutorials are optional, but will help enhance your understanding of the topics covered in the lectures. It also aims to bridge the gap between the theory from the lectures and the practical implementation required for your coursework. Each lab tutorial is presented as a Google Colab Notebook. This will allow you to run snippets of code interactively on a web interface. To be able to save any changes you make to the notebook, please save a copy of the notebook to your own Google Drive, and run your own copy of the notebook on Google... This is the easiest and recommended way to work on these tutorials.
Alternatively, you can download the notebook as an *.ipynb file and run it locally on your machine with Jupyter Notebook. A quick tutorial on Jupyter Notebook is available here on my Python Programming course. If you have the notebook somewhere in your home directory on the departmental servers, and wish to run Jupyter Notebook/Lab remotely, search for “To use Jupyter Lab” on this page. Note that the provided sample solutions are just one of many ways to solve the same problem (and your solution might even be better). This course introduces principles, algorithms, and applications of machine learning from the point of view of modeling and prediction. It includes formulation of learning problems and concepts of representation, over-fitting, and generalization. These concepts are exercised in supervised learning and reinforcement learning, with applications to images and to temporal sequences. This section should list any major frameworks that you built your project using. Leave any add-ons/plugins for the acknowledgements section. Here are a few examples.
Leslie Pack Kaelbling is Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at MIT. She has previously held positions at Brown University, the Artificial Intelligence Center of SRI International, and at Teleos Research. In 2000, she founded the Journal of Machine Learning Research, a high-quality journal that is both freely available electronically as well as published in archival form; she currently serves as editor-in-chief. Tomas Lozano-Perez is currently the School of Engineering Professor in Teaching Excellence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, where he is a member of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. He has been Associate Director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and Associate Head for Computer Science of MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. This website offers an open and free introductory course on (supervised) machine learning.
The course is constructed as self-contained as possible, and enables self-study through lecture videos, PDF slides, cheatsheets, quizzes, exercises (with solutions), and notebooks. The quite extensive material can roughly be divided into an introductory undergraduate part (chapters 1-10), a more advanced second one on MSc level (chapters 11-19), and a third course, on MSc level (chapters 20-23). At the LMU Munich we teach all parts in an inverted-classroom style (B.Sc. lecture “Introduction to ML” and M.Sc. lectures “Supervised Learning” and “Advanced Machine Learning”). While the first part aims at a practical and operational understanding of concepts, the second and third parts focus on theoretical foundations and more complex algorithms.
Remarks on Deep Dive sections: Certain sections exclusively present mathematical proofs, acting as deep-dives into the respective topics. It’s important to note that these deep-dive sections do not have accompanying videos. Why another ML course: A key goal of the course is to teach the fundamental building blocks behind ML, instead of introducing “yet another algorithm with yet another name”. We discuss, compare, and contrast risk minimization, statistical parameter estimation, the Bayesian viewpoint, and information theory and demonstrate that all of these are equally valid entry points to ML. Developing the ability to take on and switch between these perspectives is a major goal of this course, and in our opinion not always ideally presented in other courses. We also want this course not only to be open, but open source.
Welcome to Introduction to Machine Learning! This webpage will be the main portal for the course. Most things you need will be available here. The exceptions are: Please go through the study materials before the live interactive session. The live interactive Q&A session will run on Thursdays 14:00-15:00 from Week 2 onwards.
These will be held in Huxley 308. The lab sessions will be held on Tuesdays 14:00-16:00 from Weeks 2 to 8 (inclusive). These will be held in Huxley 202/206. Machine learning (ML) allows computers to learn and make decisions without being explicitly programmed. It involves feeding data into algorithms to identify patterns and make predictions on new data. It is used in various applications like image recognition, speech processing, language translation, recommender systems, etc.
In this article, we will see more about ML and its core concepts. Traditional programming requires exact instructions and doesn’t handle complex tasks like understanding images or language well. It can’t efficiently process large amounts of data. Machine Learning solves these problems by learning from examples and making predictions without fixed rules. Let's see various reasons why it is important: Traditional programming struggles with tasks like language understanding and medical diagnosis.
ML learns from data and predicts outcomes easily. The internet generates huge amounts of data every day. Machine Learning processes and analyzes this data quickly by providing valuable insights and real-time predictions. ML automates time-consuming, repetitive tasks with high accuracy hence reducing manual work and errors. Welcome to the Introduction to Machine Learning course! The course will officially start on Week 2.
To prepare yourselves, please go through Module 0 where the instructors will introduce themselves. You will also be provided with information about how the course will be run. Knowledge of Python and NumPy will be required for the courseworks. For those who are not familiar with either of these, we have prepared some optional crash courses to help you get up to speed with them before the course officially starts: You should also start forming groups of up to 4 people for your coursework. You will be working with the same group for both courseworks.

Our guided study materials are posted on this webpage in a bespoke, web-based, online course format. More specifically, we will post a weekly guide on what you should be doing on the exclusive Weekly Study Page. Each Thursday afternoon/evening, we will release a new set of lecture materials. These are mainly video-based lectures, presented across multiple 5-30 minutes chunks on our webpage.
These videos may be interleaved with some quizzes on the webpage. You should allocate a total of about 2 hours to go through and digest these materials. You are free to decide when and how you want to study these. We recommend you watch the videos directly from our webpage to get the full intended experience. Otherwise, you might miss out on further content like quizzes. PDF slides accompanying these videos will be posted on Scientia.
