We are the place for languages at Texas A&M: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Ancient Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. Beyond languages, the department features dynamic faculty and curricula in the areas of Hispanic Studies, Classics, Religious Studies, Africana Studies, Jewish Studies, and Global Studies. The department is dedicated to fostering cultural understanding and global engagement through the discovery, dissemination, and translation of knowledge.

We are at the forefront of university efforts to prepare students for a globally interconnected future and to educate responsible citizens and future leaders. Our faculty are consistently recognized for teaching excellence and personalized attention to student needs. The department offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in Classics, Global Studies, Modern Languages (French, German, or Russian), and Spanish. The development of linguistic and cultural proficiency is at the core of all of these programs. Regardless of their major, students from throughout the university can minor in the many modern languages we offer: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. We also offer a Certificate of Proficiency in Modern Languages that is designed to prepare undergraduate students for jobs and/or graduate programs requiring a strong command of one of our eight modern languages.

Students from all majors can also explore minors in our exciting interdisciplinary programs: Africana Studies, Hispanic Studies for Community Engagement, Spanish for the Health Professions, Classical Studies, Religious Studies, Jewish Studies, and Comparative Cultural... Our programs give students a combination of measurable language proficiency and a global perspective that will serve both their professional and personal goals. Students in our programs are prepared for and go on to careers in education, international development, non-profit agencies and NGOs, translating and interpreting, public relations and marketing, government service, international law, international business, engineering,... Incoming students who intend to enroll for the first time in any language course at Texas A&M University, who have previous knowledge, however acquired, of the language in which they plan to enroll, and... The placement test also serves as a basis for credit by examination. The placement examination will be administered by the department during freshman conferences along with other credit by exam tests.

The test will also be offered during fall and spring semesters. Students who take the Advanced Placement (AP) test or other acceptable tests which grant college-level credit in their foreign language of choice do not have to take the required departmental placement test. In this case, the AP and Achievement test results may be used for placement. International students whose native language is not English are exempted from satisfying the University foreign language requirement. These students are not allowed to register in those courses in their native language that are used to fulfill that requirement. The information on the courses will be supplemented.

The Core Curriculum enhances the individual degree program and university graduation requirements, and all three areas must be met by every student. Given the rapid evolution of necessary knowledge and skills and the need to take into account global, national, state, and local cultures, the core curriculum ensures that students will develop the essential knowledge and... The core curriculum acts to enrich and broaden the University’s tradition of providing thorough preparation in each student’s academic major and preparing students for a lifetime of learning. The University Core Curriculum requirements are described in the section that follows.

These requirements must be met by every student entering Texas A&M University on or after the 2014 fall semester. Students entering earlier will be guided by the core curriculum in the catalog upon which they entered the university. Individual degree programs may require that specific courses from the core curriculum be used to satisfy core curriculum requirements. Please check with individual program advisors for details. Students transferring course credit to satisfy the Core Curriculum requirements should refer to the Texas Common Course Numbering System. Texas A&M University branch campuses in Galveston and Qatar do not offer all of the courses included in the Texas A&M core curriculum.

All campuses offer courses in each Foundational Component Area so that students can complete the core curriculum at their home campus. However, the Galveston and Qatar campuses have a limited number of courses in each Foundational Component Area. Students should consult their academic advisors for information on core curriculum courses available at their specific campus. The core curriculum focuses on the development of six skills that have been shown to be effective in preparing students for the job market and their role in a diverse world and democratic society. Global Studies is a humanities-oriented major that emphasizes cultural literacy, integrative thinking, and the development of solutions-oriented understandings and approaches to complex global issues.

A major in Global Studies prepares students for careers in education, international development, non-profit agencies and NGOs, translating and interpreting, public relations and marketing, government service, international law, international business, engineering, global health, and... The study of languages and culture are the foundations of the GLST curriculum. Courses focus on making connections across human and natural systems, and how people experience the cultures they live in. Course topics emphasize how literature, films, new media, arts, and built environments convey values; how ideas shape the world; and how people, communities, languages, and cultures circulate around the globe. A study abroad experience, language fluency, and a required minor are all parts of the GLST curriculum. Students are required to complete 20 hours of foreign language through the advanced level.
