Reading Rockets is made possible with generous support from the National Education Association. Explore resources to support your young learner — our bilingual Growing Readers series, parent reading tips in 13 languages, and Reading Adventure Packs that pair fiction and nonfiction books with hands-on activities. The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read—a partnership with Arts Midwest—broadens our understanding of ourselves and our neighbors through the power of a shared reading experience. The goals of the NEA Big Read are to inspire meaningful conversations, celebrate local creativity, elevate a wide variety of voices and perspectives, and build stronger connections in each community. Programming for the 2026-2027 grant cycle will center around the theme America250.
Applicants will choose a book from the 24 titles available in the NEA Big Read Library. This year’s NEA Big Read titles celebrate and honor the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, marking America’s Semiquincentennial. These books celebrate the country’s culture, history, and resilience through the eyes of its citizens. The NebraskaREADS initiative supports the policies and practices outlined in the Nebraska Reading Improvement Act, which was enacted in 2018 and went into effect during the 2019-2020 school year. The law takes a comprehensive approach to improve the early literacy skills of Nebraska’s K-3 students. It emphasizes the importance of strong early reading instruction and individualized supports for students who are struggling. The Nebraska Reading Improvement Act values the need to implement, with fidelity, targeted interventions to bring all students to grade-level proficiency. The Nebraska State Board of Education supports and encourages systemic efforts to improve early literacy for all students as outlined in their Early Literacy Position Statement. NebraskaREADS provides tools and resources to support high-quality literacy instruction for all Nebraska students. The initiative highlights policies, procedures, and practices that guide the selection and implementation of evidence-based literacy practices and interventions, and assists districts as they build family, school, and community partnerships to help students become... The “Integrating Literacy” framework highlights a comprehensive approach to unifying the science and evidence of reading instruction. It emphasizes the importance of research-based practices in literacy. By integrating these approaches, educators can implement instructional methods that are explicit and systematic, leading to improved reading outcomes for students. Updated 9/30/2025.
To strengthen the identification of reading difficulties and improve statewide consistency, the Nebraska Department of Education has engaged in a deeper review of the Approved Assessments under the Nebraska Reading Improvement Act. Please see this update on Approved Assessments for details. Eight reading assessments remain approved for use during this time, and no immediate changes are required by districts.
