Lorraine O'Connor we were delighted to have your support in Doras Buí AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation you are welcome anytime! Yesterday AONTAS Community Education Officer, Lorraine O'Connor, attended an event at Doras BUÍ that focused on supporting community members with registering to vote and learning about the upcoming referendum. Having recently attended a voter education training with AONTAS, Dublin Adult Learning Centre, and Maynooth University, Doras BUÍ was able to put into practice their learning. During yesterday's event, they provided information to attendees on registration and different methods of voting in a way that was accessible to attendees with varying election knowledge and levels of literacy. Thank you to Adele O‘Connor and everyone else at Doras BUÍ for inviting us to come along and witness effective ways to drive civic engagement and voter participation within community education. #CommunityEducation

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Lorraine O’Connor. Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started? I have always had an interest in plants and nature; as a little girl, my paternal grandmother would take us on weekends to visit rivers and forests on the tropical island of Trinidad, where... Then we moved to the South of France, where the scents of lavender, rosemary, and pine filled the air in the hot summer days. My maternal grandmother was a vitamin/supplement queen and always putting out vitamins for us to take as children.

I think they both influenced my path, first to naturopathy and then to specializing in aromatherapy. I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far? Infuse Pure Therapy started as a hobby to treat my family and myself. It grew into a brand supporting people outside my home. Every Friday evening, a group of women in hijabs arrive outside the General Post Office on O’Connell Street in Dublin. They unfold trestle tables and unpack food from a van parked on a nearby side street.

As they go about their work, a queue forms. The women are members of the Muslims Sisters of Eire, who congregate there once a week to provide food to people who are unhoused, live with substance abuse issues or are otherwise in need. With more than 12,000 people in Ireland now without permanent accommodation, there is significant demand. The General Post Office is more than its name suggests. Its portico and six Ionic columns form part of a historical landmark. On Easter Monday 1916, a small group walked down Sackville Street, as O’Connell Street was then known, and entered the building.

They were taking part in what became known as the Easter Rising — an armed rebellion against British rule that began with the seizing of the GPO. The building served as the headquarters for the Rising and it was outside it that Pádraig Pearse, a leader of the revolt, read the Proclamation of the Republic. Included in the document was a promise: “The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of... But Ireland developed along very different lines. The seven signatories of the proclamation were among 15 executed by the British government after it suppressed the Easter Rising, while another, Roger Casement, was later hanged in England. As the winter is approaching we again see need for sleeping bags, hats, scarves, gloves, as well as tents.

Our Winter Appeal is on this page. We'll be live on Christmas Eve handing Bags for Life out. Please help us save those sleeping cold and rough. # #help #donate # #wecareaboutyou Lorraine O'Connor founder of the Muslim Sisters of Éire. Picture: Moya Nolan

Founded almost 15 years ago, the Muslim Sisters of Éire (MSOÉ) have become a familiar sight around Dublin. Well known for their soup run, homeless support, and advocacy, they have offered help to countless people who felt they had nowhere to turn. While that work is the most high profile, the group does work all over the country and in many different areas. Founder Lorraine O’Connor became a Muslim in 2005 and her experience as a Muslim woman in Ireland led her to create the charity. She had to find a way to become part of the Irish Muslim community and re-integrate herself into Irish society as a Muslim woman. We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorraine O’connor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lorraine, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?I am from Trinidad and Tobago, in the Caribbean. I grew up with grandmothers who were very connected to nature and the benefits of plants. I spent my teenage years in the South of France, where lavender grows wild and scents of rosemary and mimosa fill the air. What should our readers know about your business? My career path has been very eclectic and different, I have always been my own boss until recently. I have dedicated my life to building out the creative industries in the Caribbean.

I have produced numerous films, managed artists and major events. While doing this as I have always been passionate about natural healing. childbirth and yoga. I am a certified yoga instructor and doula. About 10 years ago, I got a calling to delve more into aromatherapy in particular. I signed up to study with Aromahead and became a certified aromatherapist.

I wanted to share this knowledge with my family, my friends and the rest of the world. Infuse Pure Therapy was born: a holistic healing approach based on aromatherapy. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.If you were to visit me in Trinidad, you would have an amazing... Trinidadians have an innate ability to enjoy themselves.

If you are not so much into the party scene, there are beautiful rain forests with rivers and some great hikes. The food in Trinidad is so versatile as we have East Indian specialities, Arabian delights or European dishes. Of course, the food would be washed down with a Carib beer or one of the fine rums from Angostura. Trinidad is an island so there are a lot of beaches and if you are into fishing or diving, you have many choices, especially on our sister island Tobago. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?I would like to recognize all those who use essential oils, plants and herbs in the daily lives. All those who appreciate nature and value the amazing potential of the earth and plants.

Absolutely amazing Women's Migrant Wellbeing morning .We were honoured to have a line up of amazing speakers who touched base on my vital aspects of women's wellbeing that is sometimes is lost in culture...
