This is the public Github organization for the Open Source Program Office, an organization focused on supporting open source efforts at the Georgia Institute of Technology. This new OSPO combines expertise from Georgia Tech’s Center for Scientific Software Engineering Center (CSSE), the Partnership for Advanced Computing Environment (PACE), and Georgia Tech’s Library. The OSPO supports a host of activities, including the development of community-driven guidelines for open source software projects on campus, support for faculty-driven open source software projects, workshops and training events targeting both GT... Georgia Tech has a significant history of participation in open source and recently boosted it with a new Open Source Program Office.

In the fall of 2023, Georgia Tech received a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to create an Open Source Program Office. In this week's issue of Open Source Atlanta, we caught up with Eric Sembrat for a Q&A about open source at Georgia Tech. Eric is an advisory board member of the new OSPO and a long-time advocate and participant in open source software initiatives. Let's start with your career journey up to your current role at Georgia Tech: For the last 13 years or so, I've been focused on web development and open source software usage in higher education here in the State of Georgia.

I started my career at Kennesaw State University working as a web developer and then as a project manager for their central IT, focused on web development solutions using Drupal as their primary content... I then moved to Georgia Tech in 2012 and have spent the better part of what's now 12 years focused in that space. I'm a Georgia Tech graduate, so it was a bit like coming home. For me, I came into an ecosystem of using Drupal as the open source content management system, so quite familiar. I've spent the last 12 years or so focused on a couple of aspects: building a community of practice for our Drupal content management system and the knowledge-set there, and then honing in on... Congrats to the MFC team on these amazing accomplishments, including being a finalist for the Gordon Bell prize!

In this module, we will delve into the tasks that maintainers often encounter during their journey of sustaining and nurturing open source initiatives. Managing the continuous influx of contributions and community engagement poses one of the foremost challenges. Balancing the encouragement of contributions, reviewing pull requests, and providing constructive feedback can be overwhelming.

We will explore strategies for efficiently handling the volume of incoming contributions while ensuring project quality and stability. Compatibility issues and the management of project dependencies present another significant hurdle. Open-source projects often rely on various external libraries and tools, each with their own updates and release cycles. We will discuss approaches for keeping projects up to date, addressing compatibility concerns, and effectively managing potential conflicts that may arise. Fostering a strong and inclusive community is a critical aspect of open-source project maintenance. Engaging contributors from diverse backgrounds and skill levels requires active moderation and clear communication.

We will examine methods for maintaining a welcoming environment, resolving conflicts, and promoting constructive collaboration among community members. Sustaining long-term growth and ensuring project sustainability is an ongoing challenge for maintainers. Fluctuations in community engagement and contributor availability can impact project continuity. We will explore strategies for effective project governance, sustainable resource allocation, and cultivating lasting support from contributors. This organization hosts open source projects from the Georgia Institute of Technology that have wide usage and impact both in their userbase and community.
