Nearly 80% of journalists report that they work after-hours at least once a week and 34% say they do this most days.

Additionally, journalist workloads can vary. Nearly a quarter of journalists produce a staggering 11 or more bylines per week, while a similar number (22%) produce 5–7 articles weekly. When seeking news sources, journalists have strong preferences for subject matter experts (82%) and researchers (77%) as sources for their reporting. CEOs round out the top three (46%) of their preferred choices. As PR professionals, we’re well aware that the state of journalism is constantly evolving. Less than halfway through the year, we’ve already witnessed mass layoffs from over a dozen major media companies and heated debates about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism. As we approach the halfway mark of 2024, our team has identified three key learnings to help inform your media relations strategies for the remainer of the year. 1. Journalists have a lot on their plates. PR professionals can help make their jobs easier.

According to Muck Rack’s 2024 State of Journalism Report, nearly a quarter of full-time staff journalists produce 11 or more stories weekly, with 64% working over 40 hours weekly. 79% reported working after hours at least once a week, while 34% reporting working late most days. With so many assignments and deadlines to juggle, it’s more important than ever to ensure we’re doing our part to get journalists the information they need in a timely and streamlined manner. This could mean sharing a digital folder with all the necessary images, documents, and data needed for a story, or jumping on the phone to answer questions and confirm important details when a writer... Being organized and nimble are essential qualities for achieving success in PR, especially when it comes to media relations. Shrinking newsrooms, funding challenges, and a decline in traditional news consumption has made capturing a journalist’s attention more challenging than ever.

Muck Rack’s annual ‘State of Journalism’ report reveals key insights about the rapidly changing nature of news reporting, giving PR professionals a roadmap for adapting and thriving in the current media landscape. Technology’s dramatic impact on how the news is gathered, reported, and consumed is nothing new. But as these trends continue to grow, it’s more imperative than ever for PR professionals to embrace tactics which meet the moment. For example, traditional newsrooms continue to decrease in size – a reality that can at least be partially attributed to an explosion in news dissemination via social media. But, shrinking newsrooms doesn’t mean news doesn’t get covered; instead, fewer journalists are taking on specific beats. Muck Rack’s research, based on surveys with thousands of professional journalists, finds that 64% of journalists are working over 40 hours a week and receiving greater than six pitches per day.

Understanding a journalist’s world is vital. The all-consuming nature of their work in 2024 means that media outreach must be compelling, strategic, and personalized to the reporter’s beat. With the report finding that half of journalists seldom or never respond to many pitches, it’s clear that PR outreach must meet a high standard to be considered. Do I ever love a good study! Research, data, facts and figures make me happy — they add something tangible and concrete to the chaos of my day-to-day life as an entrepreneur. Each year, I devour the multitude of studies that are released about the media and PR industries, and then I diligently work to incorporate the information into my work as a publicist and educator.
