After learning about the MYP program and looking at what all it represents, we were asked to create our own image. Through much thought I realized that to me the MYP is a structure that relies on the support of all of the concepts and foundations of the program. Starting from the bottom, everything builds on each other in order to reach the top. At the base of the MYP program is the IB learner profile. The IB learner profile demonstrates what learners in the IB should strive to represent. To me, that is the base foundation of the MYP.

Upon that comes ATLs, Approaches to Teaching, Areas of Interaction, and Concepts. These come in next as the second area of support because these help the IB student learn. Upon this second layer is the final layer of the foundation- Service and Personal Project. Through service and meaningful actions, students in the IB create authentic experiences to learn from. From these three layers of foundations come the eight subject areas of the MYP. These key areas plus the three foundation layers all the support the IB Middle Years Program.

At the top of the structure, relying on all the of strong support systems and foundations of the IB MYP Program is International Mindedness. This is at the top due to the overall idea that everything below is needed to effectively reach the top. One of the key features of the MYP is its emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and learning. This is the process by which students come to understand knowledge and ways of knowing from two or more disciplines or subject groups and integrate them to create new understanding. Students bring together concepts, methods, or forms of communication from two of more subjects and solve a problem, create a product, or raise a new question in ways that would have been unlikely through... This last part really resonated with me while reading , specifically “raise a new question in ways that would have been unlikely through a single discipline.” As part of a non-verbal engagement we were...

For me, when students make meaningful connections and are interested in what their learning, it sparks creative thinking and leads to further inquiry. It makes me wonder what my students would be capable of by adding the ability to communicate in Spanish to their current understanding of the world and what that could lead to when studying... With the departmentalized learning in which most high schools are organized, students have a difficult time making connections to other content areas; when they leave their classes, they leave the subject. It interests me to see what students would be capable of in a transdisciplinary/interdisciplinary setting. A major facet of the IB is getting students to think critically about what they are learning. One way the IB gets students to do this is through concept-based teaching.

A concept-based model is used in the MYP because it encourages students to process factual knowledge at a deeper intellectual level, create personal relevance, increase fluency with language, and achieve higher levels of critical,... Key concepts are broad and organizing ideas that have relevance within and across subjects and disciplines. These help students make connects to other classes, experiences, and subjects. They also “engage students in higher-order thinking, helping them to connect facts and topics with more complex conceptual understanding.” Related concepts explore key concepts in greater detail. They emerge from reflection of specific subjects and disciplines, providing a focus for inquiry into subject-specific content.

They are useful for exploring key concepts in greater detail. We were able to explore the idea of a concept-based model by engaging with an item during class. We were shown an object (see photo) and were asked to write down what we thought about it in regards to different aspects, such as perspective, responsibility, form, function, change, casusation, connection and reflection. From there we looked at what the cohort had written about the object. It was explained to us that from there the teacher could take the questions/comments about the object and create a unit based on the inquiry of the students. This would make the unit more relevent to the student and allow them to draw their own connects to the content knowledge and hopefully develop transferable skills and knowledge while allowing them to think...

Wix is a website builder that lets any business or individual build their own professional website. By combining design tools and business solutions in one AI-powered platform, Wix makes it easy for anyone to create without limits and scale confidently online. In our cohort, we were asked to write down what we thought it was to be international minded. For me this was a lot harder that I thought it would be.

Many thoughts came though my mind: someone who accepts and appreciates diversity, someone who speaks multiple languages, someone who has a knowledge of the world around them. While these may be correct is some ways, I have learned that my understanding was only skimming the surface. At the core of the IB program is international mindedness. It is what the IB learner profile strives to develop and is a primary aim and context of learning. International Mindedness is defined by IB as an attitude of openness to, and curiosity about, the world and different cultures and developing a deep understanding of the complexity, diversity and motives of human actions... What stands out to me most of their definition is the “human actions and interactions”.

As someone who has been able to travel to places very different that my home and experience different cultures and meet new people, I feel that understanding how and why people act and interact... In it quotes Lev Vygotski with his belief that students will make meaning on previous knowledge and experiences. It is up to the teacher to interpret the aspects of the IB learner profile and to use the students prior knowledge, experiences, and the students own inquiry to develop them into international minded... After reading this it got to question how I bring in my students’ experiences to my classroom to help them understand Spanish and the many cultures that speak it. I’ve come to realize that international mindedness is more than speaking another language and appreciating different cultures. It’s being able to question, understand, and appreciate the differences of our world and strive to be continuously curious about them.
