My first editorial as Editor in Chief of Health Promotion International with Chair of the Editorial Board Em. Prof Mike Daube as we call for new bold and brave approaches to health promotion. "Harmful industries and complacent and complicit governments can create doubt and frame the public debate with devastating consequences—as the climate crisis has clearly shown. While some of these practices are being challenged by public health advocates and legal experts they cannot do it alone. We all have a role to play in continuing to expose harmful practices and providing the evidence base to help others in their efforts to counter those forces that undermine health and equity." Thank... Would love to hear your thoughts below and if any parts of the editorial resonate with you.

Read about some of our accomplishments and the impact they’re having on our country’s health. As we look back on 2024, it’s my pleasure to recognize just a few of our exceptional accomplishments.
This work reflects our ongoing commitment to preventing chronic diseases, addressing health disparities, and improving the health and well-being of communities across the country. More than 80% of maternal deaths in the United States are preventable, underscoring the urgency of addressing maternal mortality head-on, and that’s exactly what NCCDPHP is doing. In 2024, CDC committed $118 to the ERASE Maternal Mortality program, empowering maternal mortality review committees (MMRCs) in 46 states and 6 territories across the nation. These committees collect data and review individual cases of maternal mortality to identify areas of systems improvement. Already, we’re seeing results. For instance:
This integral work is preventing deaths and building systems that protect mothers and families. Through these investments and collaborations, we’re creating a future where preventable maternal deaths no longer occur. Global health faces a broad spectrum of old and new challenges. Besides epidemiological problems, political conflicts, economic crisis and austerity policies are jeopardizing progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC), affecting the most vulnerable populations. During the 22nd International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) World Conference on Health Promotion held in Curitiba, Brazil, in 2016, challenges and threats for global health, in addition to a wide range... At the end of the conference, a public statement was approved claiming for Democracy and Human Rights in all countries around the world as essential conditions for the promotion of health and equity.
In this paper, we explore challenges, threats and innovations in global health promotion. We use scientific literature, analysis of the current situation of the Brazilian health system, and material presented during the 22nd IUHPE World Conference. Also, we discuss strategies to strengthen health systems, policies and practices through the approach of STI and illustrative local experiences presented at the congress mentioned above, including examples developed in the city of Curitiba. We conclude that STI is crucial to support strengthening local health systems, design effective intersectoral public policies, scaling up innovative initiates, and skilling staff in addressing the contemporary challenges. Finally, the Declaration of the 22nd World Conference on Health Promotion of the IUHPE is a fundamental policy statement based on the prioritization of democracy and human rights as essential conditions for the promotion...
