The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings have again rated universities based on how they promote the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). LUT once again ranked among the global top 101–200 out of 2,318 universities. Of the eight Finnish universities included in the Impact Rankings, LUT and the University of Helsinki tied for first place. “There are roughly 30,000 universities in the world. As an increasing number are making the ranking lists, it’s wonderful to see LUT maintaining its trailblazer position and universities worldwide taking more concrete actions for the climate,” says Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri, provost at LUT... This year, LUT placed in the top 100 in terms of three goals: clean water and sanitation (SDG6), responsible consumption and production (SDG12), and climate action (SDG13).
In climate action, LUT continued on the path familiar from recent years: the university placed 10th in 2025 and 2024, 26th in 2023, and ninth in 2022. Overall, LUT ranked in the top 25 per cent in all of its seven assessed SDGs even though the ranking included 355 universities more than last year. The Curious People newsletter shares our solutions for helping build resilient communities, industry, and businesses while promoting the energy transition and the regenerative use of natural resources. In 2024, LUT University applied for educational responsibilities in civil and construction engineering. The Government granted the responsibilities in January 2025. Education in the field will start in Lahti in 2027, initially in Finnish.
Later expansion into English is also possible. Civil and construction engineering complement the university's systemic approach to global sustainability challenges. The university expanded its range of multidisciplinary expertise also in social and communication sciences: the first academic year of the field of study, which started in autumn 2023, was brought to a successful close,... In 2024, student intakes continued to rise. A total of 8,542 students were enrolled at LUT – roughly 1,500 in Lahti and 7,000 in Lappeenranta. In addition, the university's educational impact grew: the number of graduates increased by 281 compared to the previous year, and over 51 per cent graduated within the target time.
LUT University continued its strong strategic internationalisation. The double degree programmes with Hebei University of Technology saw their first bachelor's graduates. LUT also continued its close collaboration with ten European universities in the EULiST alliance, which provides students and researchers more extensive opportunities internationally. LUT University will continue to address global issues with its new five-year strategy. LUT’s board approved the new System Earth 2030 strategy at its meeting on 3 June. As a result, LUT’s impact will focus on the following strategic areas:
LUT’s System Earth 2030 strategy refers to our planet as a complex system of connected parts, each playing a vital role in maintaining balance between humankind and the environment. The strategy also emphasises a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to research and education. “With our new strategy, we are aiming for an even greater impact. However, the foundation is the same as before: we help build resilient communities, industry, and businesses with our expertise in technology, business, and social sciences,” says Janne Hokkanen, strategy director at LUT University. LUT’s values – the courage to succeed, passion for innovation through science, and a will to build well-being – will remain the same. Tests on Finnish and French nuclear technology to take place from 2026 to 2027
LUT University in Finland has announced plans to build two test facilities at its campus in Lappeenranta, in the southeast of the country, for research into the safety of small modular reactors (SMRs). The university said in a statement on 20 March that one of the test facilities is based on Finnish technology and the other one on French technology. One of the facilities will model passive decay heat removal of the LDR-50 district heating reactor developed by the Finnish company Steady Energy. Passive decay heat removal systems rely on natural processes like convection and gravity to remove residual heat from a nuclear reactor core after shutdown, ensuring safe cooling without external power or operator intervention. Passive safety systems that do not require operator actions form an important part of the safety of new reactor types. Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT (Finnish: Lappeenrannan-Lahden teknillinen yliopisto LUT), better known by the abbreviation LUT University (Finnish: LUT-yliopisto) is a Finnish public research university which was established in 1969.
The university's Lappeenranta campus is situated on the shore of lake Saimaa – the 4th largest lake in Europe. LUT University's second campus is in the Finnish city of Lahti. The university also has research units in the Finnish cities of Mikkeli and Kouvola, as well as a regional office in Brussels, Belgium. LUT University is split into two schools of engineering and technology, a school of business and a department of social sciences. The schools focus on renewable and sustainable technologies such as clean water and air, renewable energy, circular economy and the impact of technology on society. There are 1,380 staff members and 7,770 students in the university.
Over 5,000 students reside in the Lappeenranta campus area, and the Lahti campus hosts around 1,000 students. The university also has 701 students attending Open University and 621 students in continuing education.[2] Over 15% of the university's student population is international and the school has a representation of 98 different nationalities[3][4] LUT University is a public university under the advisory of the Finnish government. LUT University and LAB University of Applied Sciences form the higher education organization LUT Universities. LUT University is a theoretical research university branch that focuses on academics and research, while LAB University of Applied Sciences is a career oriented school with practical innovation. In the 1950s, the Finnish government noticed that the country lacked accessible higher education, with most of the universities in Finland at that time being located in Helsinki and a few other cities that...
This caused a reform of the higher education system in Finland that would eventually lead to the creation of several universities in the following decades. The Finnish government made plans to establish the University of Eastern Finland in various cities, eventually landing on Lappeenranta, Kuopio and Joensuu as candidate cities. It was recognized that each city needed a university, but were too small population wise to support a complete university, hence the future university would be split, with each city teaching a specific subject,... LTKK was the third and newest technical university, after TKK and TTKK.
