New Jersey's top race for this year's election is the gubernatorial race between Democrat U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman. Last year's presidential election brought out record numbers of in-person early voters. In Bergen County, more than 112,000 people cast their votes early out of the total 463,837 ballots cast. "We think early voting will be brisk this year, nothing like the presidential election," Bergen County Superintendent of Elections Debra Francica said.
"That was so amazing. Over 112,000 people voted over the nine days and that really did alleviate a lot of the lines on Election Day. That's the full intent of early voting and that was finally realized in Bergen County." The New Jersey gubernatorial election is less than two weeks away, and the race isn't cooling off anytime soon. Recent polls suggest that Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill remains ahead. But Republican Jack Ciattarelli is narrowing the gap, making for a closely watched race in the Garden State.
