Alternative routes to teacher certification are state-defined pathways through which an individual who already has at least a bachelor’s degree can obtain certification to teach without necessarily having to complete a college, campus-based teacher... These programs offer the opportunity to gain provisional teacher certification and classroom experience. These routes usually take one of two different forms, Teaching Residency Programs and Teaching Fellowship Programs. It is strongly recommended that interested students carefully research specific programs to determine their eligibility, the time commitment each program requires beyond certification, and the target organization’s ongoing support for professional development.

Residency programs offer a combination of theory and practice, and integrate a yearlong classroom apprenticeship with carefully designed sequence of master’s-level coursework. Residents receive a stipend for living experiences throughout their training year, and a subsidized master’s degree upon completion of the program. Residents spend the full academic year in an urban public school, developing under the mentorship of a veteran teacher. Over the course of the year, Residents transition from a collaborative, co-teaching role in the classroom to a lead-teaching role. Some residency programs include: Teaching Fellows Programs recruit professionals and recent college graduates to teach in high-need districts and charter schools for at least two years.

These programs are designed specifically to provide a streamlined path into the classroom. Rather than complete a traditional teacher education program, fellows complete an intensive summer training institute, including direct classroom teaching experience, which prepares them to be successful in their first year of teaching and beyond. Fellows begin teaching full-time in the fall, while simultaneously taking certification coursework to obtain initial licensure and oftentimes, a Master of Arts in Teaching or Education. Gettysburg College is an approved teacher education provider through the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Traditional Teacher Certification candidates complete coursework and field experiences designed to meet the State Board of Education’s rigorous standards. Graduates who meet program and testing requirements will be recommended for certification and prepared to lead in classrooms across the country. I teach a variety of community-based courses in literacy and as well as inquiry-based education courses. These courses include a balanced mix of theory, practice, methodology, assessment, and innovation. My students do research with me in the field and on campus. We often present our results together at research conferences and publish co-authored journal articles and book chapters. I believe in blending theory with practice through action research, specifically inquiry. I conduct much action-research in local schools as well as with alum.

This measure was taken in response to staffing shortages, and it resulted in the conclusion of the popular teacher certification program for subjects other than music education.

Today, I am pleased to announce that Gettysburg College is stepping forward to meet this pressing need by launching a new online Master of Education degree program in Educational Design and Inquiry.

As the first program of its kind in the region, our new M.Ed. blends educational access with the principles of design thinking. The program will equip practicing teachers with a foundation in inclusive education, design thinking, and teacher inquiry. The new master’s program has been submitted to the Middle States Commission for Higher Education for approval. Applications for this year’s inaugural cohort will open from March 1 to April 15, with classes beginning on May 19. This two-year program accommodates the demanding schedules of working teachers by offering a flexible online format that incorporates three summers and offers optional in-person learning opportunities within Gettysburg’s own Innovation and Creativity Lab.

With an average class size of 8-10 K-12 teachers, Gettysburg’s M.Ed. students will progress through their courses as a tight-knit cohort, exploring topics such as place-based education and classroom culture. All students will also develop their own instructional strategies and materials through a capstone project, which will identify opportunities to create new inclusive pedagogical initiatives or address existing educational challenges.
