We offer complete educational sciences and course units in everything from humanities and social sciences to psychology and health sciences.

The courses are held by the universities’ own lecturers and experts, and it is possible to register study points for all courses. The approximately 150 academic courses and seminars held each year require no prior studies. Among other academic courses, the school offers further training for teachers, managers and other professions. Generally, Open University courses are held in evenings and on weekends. As most lecturers live elsewhere, the courses are usually held on Friday nights and Saturdays, which enables students and people in full-time work to participate.

Last year, nearly 3000 new students have registered with the school. Many choose to take optional courses included in the polytechnic’s degree programmes, whereas others participate out of curiosity or just for fun. Our courses are designed and held in cooperation with other universities, such as Åbo Akademi University and The University of Helsinki. The courses are held in accordance with the requirements of each university. The Open University has no permanent curriculum. Instead, the school strives to hold courses based on its students’ wishes.

In order to keep students’ costs to a minimum, most course books may be borrowed from the library. The Open University also provides exam services for those who study elsewhere but who wish to take their exams in Åland. Anyone can study at the Open University! Here you have the possibility to read university courses without enrolling at the university. You do not need a specific study background and there is no age limit. You can choose one or several courses in the subject(s) that interest you.

Through studies at the Open University, you can improve your professional competence, as well as develop yourself. The Open University gives you the opportunity to become acquainted with university studies. Please note that studies at the Open University do not give the right to study as a regular student at ÅAU, nor does it constitute an eligible basis for a visa application. Register for the courses at least one month before each course’s registration period ends. The extra time is required for creating the study right at Åbo Akademi. If your home university is Åbo Akademi University, please register for the courses directly in the Åbo Akademi study register Peppi. Exchange agreements between Åbo Akademi University and sending universities are made between a specific faculty or specific subject area.

That means that you should apply to study courses mainly for that faculty or subject area that you have been nominated via. As an example, if you have been nominated on an agreement that Åbo Akademi University has with your home university in the study subject of Computer Science, you should study most of your courses... If you are unsure which agreement you have been nominated via, or what courses you should study on exchange, please contact your home universities coordinator or us at the International Office and we can... Exchange students study the same courses as degree students that are offered in English. Most courses that are available in English are open to exchange students however there may be some restrictions at some faculties. Course registration for the Autumn term begins 11.8.2025 at 8 AM.

The direct link to course registration is found on the subject pages by each course. You pay over the internet when registering. Registration for Open University courses is binding and the course fee is not refunded (except if the course is canceled). Degree students at Åbo Akademi University register to our courses via Peppi. You can find all courses offered in English on the Courses in English page. From August 1, 2024, Åbo Akademi University will use a pricing system for Open University courses based on the number of credits.

The pricing is as follows: – Basic studies (and other introductory studies) 12 euros per credit.
