FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 20, 2024 CONTACT: Rachael Slobodien [email protected] CONWAY, AR — This week marks one year since the historic LEARNS Act cleared the Arkansas Senate Education Committee, the beginning of the legislative process that would ultimately result in supermajority support for the... In recognition of this milestone, Opportunity Arkansas will be releasing a series of original products this week related to the LEARNS Act and education freedom. The first of these products is a new research report, released today, that dispels five major myths surrounding education freedom. Despite the overwhelming popularity of education freedom, many leftist groups and some in the media seek to spread misinformation about the program.
This new report shines light on the myths and provides the facts about how education freedom actually works–and how it is already helping thousands of Arkansas families. In the report, “Fact vs. Fiction: Dispelling Five Myths About Arkansas’s Education Freedom Accounts,” Opportunity Arkansas’s Visiting Economist Hayden Dublois and Founder and CEO Nic Horton tackle five primary myths about education freedom which include: Now that we have your attention, subscribe to FGA's newsletter. Almost exactly one year ago, Arkansas became the first state to ever implement commonsense work requirements for able-bodied, working-age adults on Medicaid—and the far Left freaked out.
Since that time, they’ve proceeded to outright slander the state, falsely asserting that the requirement would leave the state worse off, hurt Arkansans, and was nothing more than a “reporting requirement” designed to confuse... They’ve waged an all-out war on work, even using the courts to try to (temporarily) thwart the will of Arkansans, who overwhelmingly support the requirement—Republicans and Democrats alike. Arkansas is the only state in the country that’s currently implementing commonsense Medicaid work requirements, although more than a dozen states are headed in that direction. Under this policy, able-bodied adults who are subject to the work requirement can choose to not work, train, or volunteer for up to three months before losing their taxpayer-funded benefits. If they make that choice, they are temporarily removed from the program but can come back the next calendar year with no repercussions. Just last week, the first batch of folks who refused to meet the requirements were removed from the program.
It’s a relatively small number—less than 2 percent of the Medicaid expansion population—but according to the narrative being pushed by welfare advocates, the world is ending. The reality is that here in Arkansas things are just fine, and there are a lot of important details the scare tacticians aren’t sharing.
