As the Secretary-General has said: “We cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents.” Overall, the agreement of the Pact is a strong statement of countries’ commitment to the United Nations, the international system and international law. Leaders set out a clear vision of an international system that can deliver on its promises, is more representative of today’s world, and draws on the energy and expertise of governments, civil society and...

What does that even mean?] New York, 22 September 2024 – World leaders today adopted a Pact for the Future that includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. The President of the General Assembly noted that the Pact would “lay the foundations for a sustainable, just, and peaceful global order – for all peoples and nations.” Climate disasters are increasing, inequality is growing, and conflicts are forcing millions of people into tough situations. The old ways of doing things aren’t cutting it anymore.

If we don’t change course soon, we will find ourselves caught in a cycle of crises that never ends. But here’s the good news: this moment in history is packed with opportunities! If we work together, we can carve out a better path for everyone. The future we want is still within reach, but we have to act fast. In September 2024, during the United Nations’ Summit of the Future, world leaders came together to adopt the Pact for the Future. This global agreement outlines 56 bold actions designed to ensure our legacy goes beyond addressing today’s challenges; it’s about creating a world where everyone can thrive.

Think of it as a roadmap for tackling today’s challenges while reimagining tomorrow’s possibilities. What are the simple take-home messages regarding the Pact for the Future? It is replete with aspirational language about how, by following the Agenda for the SDGs or using other unspecified methods, the world’s problems will be solved. No details, of course. No examples. However, the Pact acknowledges that essentially no progress has been made on the SDGs since they were established in 2015.

But what that means is we have to turbocharge our efforts to accomplish them all by 2030, for some obscure reason. [BTW, the planet is claimed to have reached 2.06 degrees C above the limit — briefly — and nothing happened.] [BTW, according to this site https://climate.copernicus.eu/sea-ice-cover-august-2024 Arctic sea ice extent was 17% below average 🌍 Imagine a Future if World Leaders Get It Right!
