Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) offer many advantages, such as high fuel economy, low emissions, and possible silent operation.
In the current HEV designs, there are usually two or more different DC voltage systems for different purposes of the vehicle operations. Galvanic isolation is often needed for safety concerns, especially in military vehicles. Bidirectional DC-DC converters are therefore used to interconnect different DC voltage bus and transfer energy between two different DC voltage buses. For example, in one of the developed military HEV systems, one DC-DC converter converts the high voltage (200-300V) from HEV powertrain battery to low voltage (~14V) for auxiliary needs in the vehicle, while the... High efficiency, compact size, lightweight, and reliability are all essential requirements for DC-DC converters for and HEVs. This paper details the development of an isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter for HEV energy management use, with focuses on the steady state operation analysis.
A phase-shift controlled dual bridge topology is developed to achieve the requirements. The continuous and discontinuous operation modes are analyzed and the boundary for continuous operation was studied. The voltage ripple of the output was also derived. The proposed converter was simulated and a 10kW prototype is built and tested. The experimental results of the converter's steady state operation and transient operation validated the design and simulation. With the increasing concern over global warming, the use of hybrid electric vehicle is being encouraged.
In this the cars are fueled by a combination of traditional gasoline engine along with an electric battery, thereby reducing the dependence on fuel consumption and hence improving the performance. In Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) there are different voltage buses for different purposes of vehicle operation. Bidirectional DC-DC converter is used in HEV to connect these buses for battery charging and regenerative braking. In this paper a control method is proposed which gives an easy, efficient and reliable method of controlling the converter by switching buck and boost operation depending on the speed of the vehicle. The simulation study is done by using PSIM simulation software This paper presents a dual inductor based current-fed bidirectional non-isolated DC-DC converter for energy storage applications.
The main idea of this converter is to achieve a higher voltage conversion ratio by obtaining the operation of zero current switching. The proposed soft-switching bidirectional DC-DC converter reduces the turn-off switching losses with the aid of auxiliary network, where, the auxiliary network comprised with the resonant inductor and the resonant capacitor. This converter operates under two different operating modes such as a boost (discharge) and buck (charge) modes. In both the modes of converter operations, the IGBTs are operating under zero current turn-off in order to minimize the switch turn-off losses and to improve the efficiency of the converter. The principle of the operations and its theoretical analysis are validated by the experimental results using a 300W (50 V/250 V) converter system.
