This guide has been developed specifically to assist student teachers who are practising teaching in a school classroom. Student teachers are expected to give their best in teaching students as it is time to showcase skills gained from theoretical courses. Much as the student teachers will be ‘practising teaching’, the students will not be ‘practising learning’ but they will be ‘actually learning’. Thus, the student teachers should treat the teaching component of their school-based experience seriously.

This Topic Study Group aimed to improve understanding of the importance, specific nature of, and challenges associated with research on teaching and classroom practice; to promote exchanges and collaborations around the identification and examination... Developing systematic research on classroom practice in school mathematics is a relatively new endeavor. In fact, this Topic Study Group was only the third time in ICME history to take a primary focus on classroom practice. The focus of TSG 26 was discussion of research related to mathematics teaching and classroom practice. Classroom practice includes the activities of teaching and learning located within the classroom.

It requires examination of the interactions among the mathematical content to be taught and learned, the instructional practices of the teacher, and the work and experiences of the students within particular educational settings. In these interaction processes, mathematical content is contextualized through situations, the teacher plays an important instructional role drawing on his/her knowledge, and the students involve themselves in the learning processes. Research aims to understand the nature and extent of the interactions, the The purpose of the study was to identify the challenges faced and perceptions held by student teachers in teacher training colleges in Kenya. A specific case of Tambach was studied. In arriving at the sample for the study, both purposive and random sampling techniques were applied in which twenty seven (27%) percent of male and female in every school participated.

The data for the study was collected through a self completed questionnaire which comprised of Likert type questions, rating items and open-ended questions. The data was analyzed using the SPSS programme in which frequencies, percentages and cross tabulation were calculated. The analyzed data was presented using Bar charts and Tables. The study revealed that student teachers experienced some challenges which included confusing formats of the schemes of work for same subject, departure and arrival time which was seen to be too early and late... Student teachers were found to be holding positive perceptions about teaching practice which included giving them an opportunity to interact with regular teachers and share everyday teaching experiences. A number of recommendations were made; which if implemented would improve the face of teaching practice in teacher training colleges.
