Propublica Local Reporting Network Seeks Projects Us

Local news organizations and reporters can apply for this program to work on investigative stories in their communities. ProPublica has launched the Local Reporting Network and is seeking five local accountability projects to fund and partner with. The organization will pay the salary (up to US$75,000), plus an allowance for benefits, for full-time reporters. Selected reporters will work on their projects starting Oct. 1. The reporters will report to their home newsroom, with the guidance and support from ProPublica.

Their work will be published or broadcast by their home newsroom and by ProPublica as well. Applicants must send a proposal describing an investigative project they want to pursue, the reporter who would be chosen to spearhead the work, and the suggested market salary for him or her. A small business program allowed Christopher Dawson to win big contracts if he promised to uplift Native Hawaiians. Instead, federal prosecutors allege, he used the money to line his own pockets. Since its founding in 2018, the Local Reporting Network has grown into one of ProPublica’s marquee undertakings, bringing together local talented journalists and all the resources our newsroom has to offer. The journalism we create has changed laws, held bad actors to account and helped communities.

It has strengthened the craft of local investigative journalism and created a network in dialogue with us and with one another. In 2024, we launched the 50 State Initiative, a commitment to support yearlong projects in every state by 2029. The Chicago Police Department’s promotions system allows officers’ disciplinary records to be ignored. Despite years of reform efforts, nothing has changed. ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network began in January 2018 in an effort to help remedy the lack of investigative reporting at the local level. In 2024, ProPublica launched the 50 State Initiative, a commitment to support accountability reporting projects in every state by the end of 2029. We are now seeking five newsrooms — in five different states — to work with us on an investigative project for one year. Newsrooms from 40 states — including radio, tv and written word outlets — are eligible to apply.

(We’ve already selected newsrooms from 10 states so we can’t take applications from those places right now; those are: Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Maine, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Tennessee and Utah.) ProPublica will pay the annual salary (up to $75,000 plus an allowance for benefits), for one full-time reporter in each newsroom. Successful candidates will have a proven track record of investigative reporting and impact, and provide a memo about the project they’re proposing for the duration of the partnership, which will begin July 1, 2025. Once accepted, local reporters will work from and report to their home newsrooms, while receiving extensive support and guidance for their work from ProPublica, including collaboration with a senior editor and access to the... The application deadline is east on July 21st at 5pm. Reporters selected for the one-year programme will begin work on October 1, 2025. Through this partnership, Propublica will reimburse news organizations for the salaries of selected reporters (up to $75,000 plus a scholarship for benefits). Additionally, ProPublica offers editorial support along with expertise in data, research, visual storytelling, graphics, design, audience and engagement. See the Eligibility Map for more information. As part of the 50 state initiative, Propublica is currently working with the newsrooms of the first 10 states. Five more newsrooms will begin in July. Reports with Connecticut Mirror about towing cars in the state have sparked legislative reforms to overhaul a century-old towing law that supports towing companies at the expense of drivers. Georgia has documented the lack of Medicaid labor requirements for states, which are announced as a model for other parts of the country, cost millions. In Tennessee, one company has sought over 100,000 borrowers, indicating that it has significantly expanded its use of unique, high-profit loans.
