public access a guide for corresponding authors acs publications

Funding agencies, most recently US Government Agencies such as NIH, are moving toward requiring immediate public access for reports on funded research. If you publish with ACS, here’s how to stay compliant—and why it matters. Until recently, many funders allowed a 12-month embargo before peer-reviewed reports on funded research had to be shared or posted to a public repository. That’s ending. By January 2026, all U.S. federal agencies will require immediate (zero-embargo) access.

Many European funders already have similar requirements. In other words, some funders are requiring the peer-reviewed accepted manuscript version of your work to be publicly accessible as soon as it’s accepted or published. Most funders, such as NIH, require you to publicly share the accepted manuscript (the version after peer review but before final formatting). Usually this entails depositing or posting the accepted manuscript to a repository such as PubMed Central. This is called green open access. Making the fully edited, published article (also called the version of record) publicly available is gold open access.

More than 1,700 institutions have ACS open access agreements. If you are the submitting corresponding author at an institution with an agreement, you can choose to publish open access and make your work public at no personal cost. Check to see if your institution has coverage and review the details. By December 31, 2025, researchers who receive funds from U.S. federal funding agencies will be required to comply with updated #publicaccess policies—and this impact stretches to authors worldwide who collaborate with federally funded researchers. Are you ready for the change?

Our guide can help: https://go.acs.org/dw5 Manuscripts and revised manuscripts must be submitted via the ACS Publishing Center (publish.acs.org). E-mailed submissions and hardcopy submissions will not be processed. An overview of and complete instructions for the Web submission process are available at the ACS Publishing Center website. When submitting, please be aware of the following requirements: ACS Electrochemistry is an international journal for high-quality, cutting-edge original research in all areas of electrochemistry.

The journal aspires to provide a platform for the diverse communities of scientists practicing electrochemistry to address global challenges. The journal welcomes submissions across fundamental, applied, experimental and theoretical aspects of electrochemistry research. Articles. Reports of original research focused on an individual significant finding or an advance of immediate and lasting impact that is of broad interest to the electrochemistry community. The Editors request authors explain their findings concisely and accurately. Authors are encouraged to use Supporting Information as appropriate.

Communications. A brief disclosure of exceptional timeliness reporting significant new electrochemistry concepts or applications. Communications will be considered on an accelerated schedule. A brief statement explaining how the manuscript meets the criteria of urgency and significance should be included in the cover letter. Communications have a maximum length of four journal pages. Green open access is available for submitting corresponding authors at selected US institutions.

Find out if your institution participates and how to make your accepted manuscript publicly available when publishing with ACS. Effective July 1, 2025, authors who receive funding from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) are required to deposit their accepted manuscript in PubMed Central (PMC) immediately upon publication (“self-archiving”). Other US Federal funding agencies are expected to implement similar mandates from December 31, 2025. Authors at qualifying institutions can now publish their research in any ACS hybrid journal and immediately self-archive their manuscript in their funder or institution’s repository though an ACS read and green agreement. This means that authors can publish with ACS and remain confident they will be able to meet public access requirements without the need to pay additional fees such as an APC or ADC. This offer is available for the duration of an institution’s All Publications Package agreement with ACS Publications.

This upgrade extends through the end of 2027 with no impact on standard annual renewal increases.* Authors that are collaborating with researchers from another organization should confirm that they will act as the submitting corresponding author to qualify for this program.
