This version is the largest QS has ever conducted. In the 15th edition of the rankings, we have continued to measure five broad subject areas: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management. Within these five areas, there are 55 specific subject areas.

This comprehensive evaluation is based on the performance of over 21,000 academic offerings from more than 1700 universities worldwide. This year, the rankings reveal several noteworthy trends. The United States continues to dominate with the highest number of entries, showcasing its strength particularly in disciplines such as engineering and computer science. However, emerging educational powerhouses are making their mark. Leading the rankings, the United States boasts 3,245 ranked entries, claiming the top position in 32 out of the 55 subjects evaluated. Prestigious institutions like Harvard and MIT remain at the forefront, with Harvard recognized as the leading university in 19 disciplines and MIT excelling in 12.

The UK follows with 1,883 entries, achieving the number one position in 18 different subjects. Remarkably, both Cambridge and Oxford feature prominently, with multiple top rankings. Notably, ETH Zurich ties in its performance, highlighting the UK's competitive academic landscape. As financial pressures mount on traditional educational systems in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, emerging markets in Asia and the Middle East are beginning to rise. Countries such as Mainland China have made significant strides, producing numerous new entries in the rankings. Peking and Tsinghua universities have each secured top-three placements in their respective fields.
