Reading Is Fundamental Book Drive
Your $4 gift can ensure a new book finds its way into a child's hands. Celebrate National Reading Month and donate to our virtual book drive today! Reading Is Fundamental works to disrupt the alarming U.S. literacy crisis by inspiring the joy of reading in children, a critical element to driving the frequency, motivation, and engagement needed to create skilled readers. We know that if we build a foundation of joy for children, then development, discovery, and opportunity follow. Help celebrate National Reading Month!
For just $4, you can help us connect young readers and their families with books that will inspire their love of learning. Here are just a few reasons to get involved. You can help children and families own books—and achieve their potential. Your donation helps more children learn how to read. In 2006, Book’em joined forces with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the largest children's literacy organization in the United States. Today, Book’em administers the RIF program in 15 Title I Metro Nashville elementary schools and is working to be able to serve more schools in the future.
Each classroom is visited by a volunteer reader five times throughout the school year, during which the reader engages the students through interactive reading. At the end of each visit, students each pick their own book to keep and enjoy at home. Each child ends the school year with five new books in their home library, a relationship with a reading role model, and (we hope!) a re-energized love of books and reading. Locally, the RIF program now serves over 7,000 children a year through a network of more than 250 reading role model volunteers, distributing 31,000+ books annually. RIF is FULL for the 2025-2026 school year, and we cannot thank you enough for your support! If you were unable to join us this year, fill out our Volunteer Interest Form here so we know to keep you in mind for RIF next school year.

Campaign will be supported by a $25,000 donation from Sinclair BALTIMORE & WASHINGTON – Sinclair Inc. (Nasdaq: SBGI) today announced a partnership with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s leading children’s literacy nonprofit, to launch Sinclair Cares: Supporting Children’s Literacy. The nationwide campaign seeks to create awareness around children’s literacy challenges and help get books into the hands of children across the U.S. through a virtual book drive. The Sinclair Cares: Supporting Children’s Literacy campaign will run throughout March, National Reading Month.
One in three children entering kindergarten lack the basic skills they need to learn to read, and two-thirds of U.S fourth graders do not read at grade level*. RIF was recognized as the Most Trusted Brand and Brand of the Year in the Youth Non-Profit category in the 2024 Harris Poll EquiTrend Study Children's Center (H.S. Mountain View), Mountain View School District “What an astonishing thing a book is. It's a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles.
But one glance at it and you're inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic." Carol Henault, the Executive Director of Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California, speaks with enthusiasm and a sense of delight as she describes her journey in the nonprofit world.
Tell Me Another Story, is an inspiring 30-minute overview of diversity in children’s literature that highlights the dedication of intellectual and artistic giants, past and present, whose efforts have uplifted children’s literature, from W.E.B. Du Bois, Augusta Baker, Pura Belpré and Ezra Jack Keats, to Pat Cummings, Marley Dias, Grace Lin, Christopher Myers, and Andrea Davis Pinkney. It clarifies the enormous need for us to tell our children another, more inclusive story. This is a film you will want to share with your students, colleagues and friends. Nearly two-thirds of low-income families do not own any books for their children. Reading Is Fundamental Pittsburgh addresses this critical need by providing children with access to self-selected books, creating positive environments that motivate children to develop a lifelong love of reading, and engaging families in literacy...

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation's leading children's literacy nonprofit, today announced the launch of the fifth annual Rally to Read 100 (www.RallytoRead.org) coinciding with RIF's 60th anniversary in 2026. This year will also feature a live, nationwide celebration in March 2026 simulcast from the Union Square Barnes & Noble in New York City in honor of National Reading Month.
