This data visualization enables users to explore how countries support United Nations (UN)-based multilateralism and assess their commitment towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a series of indicators. The paper provides insights on how countries’ support for UN-based multilateralism (UN-Mi) can be measured, using six headline indicators: (i) UN treaty ratification, (ii) votes aligned with the majority at the UN General Assembly,... The paper also presents how the support of major economies for UN-based multilateralism evolved over time. The UN Charter sets out clear principles to maintain friendly relationships among world nations and to preserve peace and security. In international relations, UN member states hold the primary responsibility for implementing the principles of the UN Charter.

This paper presents and describes a new measure of countries’ commitment to implementing the principles of the UN Charter. The Index of UN-Based Multilateralism (or Multilateralism Index, for short) uses five indicators that are then aggregated in a composite index. This Index aims to be a tool to help hold countries accountable for implementing the principles of the UN Charter and to provide an independent assessment of countries’ efforts to promote multilateralism. Unlike other great transformations of the past, sustainable development requires long‐term directed change. This working paper discusses and compares methods and tools that can be used to track policies related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the principle of Leave-No-One-Behind (LNOB). The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are targets for global development that were adopted in 2015.

All countries have agreed to work towards achieving them by 2030. Our SDG Tracker presents data across all available indicators from the Our World in Data database, using official statistics from the UN and other international organizations. This free, open-access information tracks global progress towards the SDGs and allows people worldwide to hold their governments accountable for achieving the agreed goals. Data is available for many indicators, but there are still gaps. We hope this collaborative approach allows us to support the UN in developing the most complete and up-to-date sources for tracking global progress. Our original SDG Tracker was published in 2018, and this revised version was launched in 2023.

We will keep this up-to-date with the most recent data and SDG developments through the end of the 2030 Agenda. The overall score measures the total progress towards achieving all 17 SDGs. The score can be interpreted as a percentage of SDG achievement. A score of 100 indicates that all SDGs have been achieved. The Sustainable Development Report (formerly the SDG Index & Dashboards) is a global assessment of countries' progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It is a complement to the official SDG indicators and the voluntary national reviews.
