С.321 – 325. Smart Learning Environments volume 11, Article number: 54 (2024) Cite this article This paper highlights the potential of technology and innovation in advancing education. We discuss how emerging technologies can enhance teaching and learning experiences.

We underscore challenges and opportunities in integrating technology into educational practices through an overview of current trends and practices. A balanced approach emphasizing technological integration and pedagogical innovation is essential for preparing students to succeed in an increasingly demanding world. Thus, this paper highlights the importance of fostering a learning environment that prioritizes learner-centered approaches and encourages educators to innovate by utilizing the power of technology to create meaningful educational experiences. In an era of rapid technological advancements and global shifts, it is clear that the traditional paradigms of education are no longer sufficient. Teaching and learning effectively in today’s world requires continuous innovation. However, while innovation promises to transform education, it also poses challenges that require more profound reflection on how we implement new technologies and methodologies.

Mandela’s words highlight the influence that education has on individuals and societies. Increasing the quality of education can help build a better future, as outlined in United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). However, while SDG 4: Quality Education focuses on providing inclusive and fair education for all, new technologies can often increase inequalities, as not everyone has equal access. This, in turn, threatens the goal of SDG 10: Reducing Inequalities, as technological innovation can deepen the digital divide due to a lack of available resources. Additionally, the rush to integrate technology into education raises concerns about sustainability and fairness, as highlighted in SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Therefore, we should ask questions like “Are these advancements truly beneficial, or do they risk creating new problems?”.

We should think critically about how we use innovation in education and ensure that it benefits everyone and leads to meaningful, long-term change for a fairer and more sustainable world. Educators worldwide are often unwilling to try new things and change their well-rooted pedagogical strategies by leaving their comfort zones (Fuad et al., 2022). One of the reasons is that the definition of innovation is misinterpreted. Innovation is often thought to have stemmed from originality. However, while originality creates something entirely new, innovation lies not necessarily in originality but in authenticity. Authenticity in innovation means adapting or integrating existing tools and methods to address real needs or challenges in a meaningful and context-sensitive way as a product of problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity skills.

This distinction is crucial because education does not exist in a vacuum. It is embedded in social, cultural, and economic contexts that shape learners’ needs and experiences. An educational tool or method that may seem original might fail if it does not consider the authenticity of the learners’ context. For example, the most advanced technologies in education might not yield meaningful results if they are not aligned with students’ existing abilities or real-world challenges. Therefore, innovation is not measured by how novel an idea or tool is but how effectively it is used to create authentic learning experiences.
