Major global shocks in recent years—including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, and the triple planetary crisis, among others—have challenged our international institutions. Unity around our shared principles and common goals is crucial and urgent. The Summit of the Future (September 2024) is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enhance cooperation on critical challenges and address gaps in global governance. It will reaffirm existing commitments, including to the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Charter, and move towards a reinvigorated multilateral system better positioned to impact people’s lives positively. The proposal for a Summit of the Future originated in the Our Common Agenda report. The report was a response by the UN Secretary-General to a call from Member States for ideas on how better to respond to current and future challenges.

The Common Agenda report called for a renewal of trust and solidarity at all levels – between peoples, countries and generations. It made the case for a fundamental rethink of our political, economic and social systems so that they deliver more fairly and effectively for everyone. It also recommended a corresponding renewal of the multilateral system, with the Summit of the Future as a defining moment to agree on the most critical improvements necessary. Member States agreed to hold the Summit in September 2024. They also agreed that the Summit would have an outcome – a Pact for the Future. This once-in-a-generation opportunity serves as a moment to mend eroded trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively tackle current challenges as well as those that have emerged in recent years or may yet...

This is also a moment of immense opportunity, when rapid advances in science and technology, properly managed, hold the promise to deliver a better, more peaceful, prosperous, and fairer future for all. As the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the General Assembly: “Our world badly needs: reform of the Security Council; reform of the international financial system; the meaningful engagement of youth in decision-making; a Global... In collaboration with the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (oiip), the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna hosted a panel discussion titled “The UN Summit of the Future – Main Takeaways and practical aspects... We already have many existing agreements and commitments, starting with the UN Charter and including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement and many others. At the Summit of the Future on 22 September 2024, world leaders adopted the Pact for the Future and its annexes: the Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations. This historic agreement is the culmination of years of inclusive dialogue and collaboration aimed at modernizing international cooperation to address today’s realities and prepare for tomorrow’s challenges.

The Pact for the Future is the most comprehensive international agreement in decades, covering entirely new areas while also resolving issues that have long stalled consensus. Its primary objective is to ensure that international institutions are equipped to navigate a world vastly different from the one in which they were created. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres observed, “We cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents.” The Pact reaffirms global commitment to the United Nations, the international system, and the principles of international law. It envisions a world where the international system delivers on its promises, reflects the diversity of today’s global landscape, and leverages the collective strength of governments, civil society, and other key partners. “The Pact for the Future, together with the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations, unlocks new opportunities and untapped potential,” said Secretary-General Guterres during the Summit of the Future.

The President of the General Assembly hailed the Pact as a foundation for “a sustainable, just, and peaceful global order – for all peoples and nations.” The Pact addresses a wide array of critical global issues, with commitments to: The Summit of the Future is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together at UN Headquarters in New York, to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard... This once-in-a-generation opportunity serves as a moment to mend eroded trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively tackle current challenges as well as those that have emerged in recent years or may yet... The aim of the Summit is twofold: accelerate efforts to meet our existing international commitments and take concrete steps to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities. This will be achieved through an action-oriented outcome document known as the Pact for the Future.

At the opening of the Summit, world leaders are expected to adopt the Pact, which will include a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes. The President of the UN General Assembly urged all nations to sustain their momentum toward decisive action and to advance the outcomes of the Summit of the Future as it concluded on Monday.
