It’s so fun to read alongside fellow cozy mystery enthusiasts as we discuss the standards of a good crime story or an unexpected plot twist that we didn’t see coming from the main character. Often our bookish discussions get repetitive though, so we are always on the lookout for great book discussion points. Here is a discussion guide of the most asked questions we’ve come across when reading in the cozy mystery genre that will hopefully help your cozy mystery book club have a lively discussion:
When we think of what makes a great book there are two things that quickly come to mind: The Plot and The Characters. Without these good starting blocks, you won’t have a very good story. That’s why our questions often refer back to these main topics. As they cause us to reflect on what went right with the story. Often everyone’s most memorable thing from a book is something that happened in the story; it’s what they go on to remember long after the characters’ names have faded from memory. They remember some interesting twist a book took or an exotic place the author described.

Each sub-genre is a plethora of knowledge, and they bring people together in ways many other genres can’t. They touch on real life, with deep topics, usually a murder mystery, however, they are usually laced with a sense of humor that makes you feel invested in the characters’ lives. Mystery writers do have quite the challenge though of keeping us on our toes! In the dictionary “caper” is to “dance or skip about in a lively or playful way.” The caper mystery is the one that plays most with the mystery genre definition.
Capers fit into the cozy mystery category. Think of the movies, “Topkapi” or “Ocean’s 11.” O. Henry’s “The Ransom of Red Chief” is a classic caper short story. The TV series “Leverage” was a caper show. Humor, audacity, cleverness and adventure are hallmarks of capers. Capers include one or more crimes that are open to the reader; they happen in plain view.
Often the crooks are a bunch of colorful misfits who somehow come together and pull it off. Murder is rare in capers, but the crime is outrageous and outsized for the talents of the criminals. Typically, the planning and execution of the crimes like theft, kidnapping, or swindling is the focus, not the solving of the crime. Very often in caper mysteries, the police and other authorities are depicted as inept and bumbling. The crooks are typically likable and either plan something too big, or plan too elaborately for a simple crime. The squabbling among the various ensemble members accounts for some of the tension and humor.
Each person has a specific role, so they can’t just dump someone who is hard to get along with. On occasion, a caper involves a single character who must perform all the actions an ensemble crew would, but it is more common to have a cast for the crime. Refresh your browser window to try again. The FBI has warned about a new type of scam where your Facebook pictures are harvested to act as “proof-of-life” pictures in a virtual kidnapping. The scammers pretend they have kidnapped somebody and contact friends and next of kin to demand a ransom for their release. While the alleged victim is really just going about their normal day, criminals show the family real Facebook photos to “prove” that person is still alive but in their custody.
This attack resembles Facebook cloning but with a darker twist. Instead of just impersonating you to scam your friends, attackers weaponize your pictures to stage fake proof‑of‑life evidence. Both scams feed on oversharing. Public posts give criminals more than enough information to impersonate you, copy your life, and convince your loved ones something is wrong. This alert focuses on criminals scraping photos from social media (usually Facebook, but also LinkedIn, X, or any public profile) then manipulating those images with AI or simple editing to use during extortion attempts. If you know what to look for, you might spot inconsistencies like missing tattoos, unusual lighting, or proportions that don’t quite match.
