This course's materials, or materials linked from these pages, may mention CS accounts. CS accounts have been deprecated and are not needed for the completition of this course. If you are a CS major or minor, please activate university account here. The university offers its students two ways for wireless internet connection: Eduroam and HUPnet. You can also get guest access to HUPnet. HUPnet is not secured, so we heavily recommend using Eduroam.

You can also access it in some campus sites overseas. Instructions on installing Eduroam are found here. You can also install it on your mobile device: Android and iPhone. The CS departments offers several servers for accessing your personal university AD home folder. You can request account activation on these servers from Helpdesk, after which you can login using your AD credentials. If you use the department's servers over SSH connection and have added your private key to an SSH-agent, according to university regulations you have to secure the private key with a password.

Kurssi on perustieteiden kandidaattiohjelman pakollinen peruskurssi. Kurssi on täysin itseopiskeltavissa. Kurssin moduuleja voi suorittaa vapaasti omaan tahtiin verkossa. Suosittelemme, että suoritat moduulit sitä mukaan, kun kyseisille taidoille tulee tarvetta muissa opinnoissa.

Moduuleita voi suorittaa useamman lukukauden aikana läpi opintojen ja osasuoritukset säilyvät tallella vuodesta toiseen. Kurssille ei tarvitse etukäteen ilmoittautua, eikä kurssin moduulien suorittamisen kannalta ole väliä sillä, onko kurssi omassa opintosuunnitelmassasi. This course is primarily designed for CS freshmen, and its purpose is to go through the basics of the command line in a Unix-like system, using Git for version control, and building a static... The course’s nickname “lapio” is Finnish, and it simply means “shovel”, as the course teaches the basic use of the essential tools in Computer Science. The course is passed with an online exam, which is held in Moodle, an e-learning environment widely used in the University. In order to enter the course in Moodle, you will need to enter a key, which is is lapio-on-tyovaline. The exam questions are primarly based on the material provided on this Website, which is divided into three sections, each covering a different subject: the command line, Git and Github, and static websites. If you have experience of using the command line, Git and HTML/CSS, you are free to take the exam right away, without reading the material or doing the exercises.

At the start of each section there is a list of learning goals, which will help you determine whether you should read the material or not. Even if you don’t read the material, make sure to go through this page as it provides important information about the department’s IT systems. However, if you are not familiar with the tools discussed on this course, go through the material carefully. The course will cover skills you will definitely need in your CS studies and in the working life. There are exercises embedded in the material, and doing them will earn you course points. Tämän moduulin suorittamiseen on hyvä varata suunnilleen yhden päivän verran työaikaa. Oletamme, että Linuxin käyttö on ennestään tuttua — suosittelemme, että suoritat ensin Tietokone työvälineenä -kurssin Linux-moduulin, jos et ole sitä vielä suorittanut! Keskeiset vastaantulevat ja Linuxiin liittyviä lisävinkkejä on koottu myös tämän moduulin loppuun. Tämä moduuli on tarkoitus suorittaa järjestyksessä alusta loppuun. Monien tehtävien yhteydessä oikean vastauksen valitsemisen jälkeen paljastuu hiukan lisätietoa, joka voi olla jatkossa hyödyllistä.

Hyväksyttyyn suorittamiseen riittää, että yhtä lukuunottamatta kaikki tehtävät on ratkottu oikein. Kurssille ei tarvitse erikseen ilmoittautua, eikä tämän moduulin suorittamisen kannalta ole väliä, onko kurssi omassa opintosuunnitelmassasi. Voit vapaasti aloittaa moduulin suorittamisen täällä A+:ssa, kunhan kirjaudut sisään Aalto-tunnuksellasi. Tämä kurssi on tarkoitettu Helsingin yliopiston tietojenkäsittelytieteen ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijoille. Kurssille on olemassa oma kurssialue. Moodle-alueelle pääsy vaatii kurssiavaimen, joka on lapio-on-tyovaline. Tentti perustuu pääosin tältä sivustolta löytyvään materiaaliin, joka on jaettu kolmeen osaan: Komentorivin perusteet, Git ja versionhallinta, sekä HTML ja CSS. Jos aiheista on kokemusta aikaisemmin, materiaalin lukeminen tai tehtävien tekeminen ei ole välttämätöntä tentin läpipääsemiseksi, vaan tenttiin voi osallistua suoraan. Jos kuitenkin käsiteltävät asiat ovat vieraita, kannattaa materiaali käydä läpi huolellisesti, sillä kurssilla opeteltavia taitoja tulet varmasti tarvitsemaan tulevissa opinnoissa. This is the beginning of the course material. The primary goal of the first part is to get to know the command line in a Unix-like environment.

The goal is that after this part the student Computers are an inseparable part of the modern society. The average citizen is likely to use several different kinds of computers every day. Computers are also arguably the most important tool for computer scientists. You are probably used to using computers in a certain way. Creating, searching and deleting files is most likely easy for you.

You know that double clicking a folder moves you inside it, and you know how to open the window prompt for deleting a file, or how to open an image with a specific program. The former is an example of a graphical user interface (GUI): The possible actions are presented in some sort of menu and chosen by clicking. Files can also be dragged and dropped to new places. Contrary to the graphical user interface, the command line is a text-based user interface. This means that one does not use the mouse for choosing specific actions. Instead, the computer is given commands by writing them and pressing enter.

The options are not presented in the same way as in a graphical environment, and one can get by without using the mouse at all. One must pass the exam in order to receive a grade from the course.
