As I move further along with these essays, which are aimed at showing why we need a nonviolent revolution in the U.S. and how it can come about, I thought I would take this essay and the next to explain why democracy in the U.S. is failing. American democracy is under attack from two intertwined and mutually reinforcing forces. And it’s not solely Donald Trump who’s the prime threat—Trump is just the beneficiary of these twin threats. These twin threats are:
The warning signs are no longer subtle. Yet during each of those previous times of tumult, the basic dynamics of American democracy held firm. Candidates who won the most votes were able to take power and attempt to address the country’s problems.
