My name is Selena, and I’m so excited to be part of Fremont Open Plan’s amazing community. I have a background in Child Development and have had the opportunity to work and volunteer in classrooms ranging from Preschool through 3rd grade. Prior to joining Fremont Open Plan, I taught Kindergarten in Patterson.
I am incredibly grateful to be teaching at a school that values the whole-child approach and emphasizes hands-on learning. I’m passionate about creating an inclusive classroom environment where students can flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. I’ve admired Fremont Open Plan’s philosophy for many years, and I’m thrilled to now contribute to this wonderful community! I joined the Fremont Open Plan community as a kindergarten teacher in 2008. I have a background in early childhood education and have taught preschool - 2nd grade. I was looking for a school that would allow me to teach the whole child as well as to teach children at their own individual rate of learning.
I have been an avid reader since I was a child and love to inspire and develop an enthusiasm for reading in my students. Being a child’s first teacher is one of the most amazing privileges and my hope is to instill a love for learning and curiosity in my students. FOP’s Primary Department consists of our 1st & 2nd graders and they are divided between three homerooms. However, they rotate between all three teachers for various activities. Our Primary Department staff includes: Hello, I’m Dana Roy and I am one in the trio of Primary Department teachers.
My husband, Matt, and I were first introduced to Fremont Open Plan as parents when our boys, Zach and Josh, attended this amazing school. Over the past twenty years, I have taught preschool, kindergarten, first grade and now 1st and 2nd grades at FOP. I have a strong desire to honor children and where they are developmentally, socially, emotionally as well as academically. I have seen how this amazing school fosters a great love of learning in its students, and I am so excited to now be one of its teachers. Make Fund Drive and Other Contributions Online: Open Education is founded on the work of John Dewey and Jean Piaget.
Their work supports the belief that children have a fundamental desire to learn, that learning is constructed from experience, and that children have the capacity to conduct their own inquiries. Open education recognizes that children learn by asking questions, investigating answers, and revising hypotheses in a continuous process of building understanding. Activities are structured to provide hands-on experiences that allow children to construct knowledge, individually and in small groups, at their own rate of learning. By learning to make decisions about how to work productively and to set goals for that work, students are both cognitively and emotionally engaged in their learning. Fremont Open Plan is a parent-participation elementary school program within the Modesto City School District. It was founded in 1976 by parents looking for a school that stressed self-esteem and active parent and child involvement.
FOP operates as a separate program in nine classrooms at John C. Fremont elementary school. The classroom environments at Open Plan are multi-age settings that encourage cooperative learning and social responsibility. Welcome to Fremont Open Plan! When we chose Open Plan, we didn’t do it lightly. Choosing the educational path for my oldest daughter and her younger siblings was a monumental decision.
We considered other public, private, and even charter schools prior to deciding that Open Plan was right for our family. Being a psychologist, the emphasis on the “whole-child” really resonated with me. Students are more than just academics or test scores. While these data points give us information, the key to success is completely dependent upon social and emotional health. Open Plan embodies this philosophy and has helped shape my children in positive, lifelong ways. Enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year is now closed!
Please stay tuned for enrollment information for the 2026-2027 school year Our academic program is grounded in the belief that children build knowledge by doing. This principle drives how we design activities, whether children are building a math concept using hands-on materials, investigating what a plant needs to grow, or engaging in a Pioneer Day simulation. Using the daily lives and innate curiosity of the students, math and science are studied in ways that help children make sense of the world. Within thematic units, children engage in project-based learning that allows them to define a question or topic to research, gather information, and present it in their own chosen format. Our academic program reflects the belief that if students are given the opportunity to explore a topic from a variety of perspectives and integrate it with other subjects, the knowledge gained truly belongs to...
Learning that occurs in meaningful contexts is at the heart of all Open Plan curriculum. With day trips to places like MJC for Earth Day, the Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley, or a simple fall walk in the park, along with overnight excursions to Monterey, Yosemite, and... In these contexts, students make connections to literature, themes, and concepts that bring learning to life and create lasting memories. Fremont Open Plan maintains a strong, interested parent community who have organized themselves into the Parent Advisory Group. PAG is primarily responsible for the school’s support system. The many programs, volunteers, materials, field trips and a host of other educational opportunities are directly and indirectly supported by PAG through its many active communities.
PAG meets once per month: location and time TBD. All FOP parents and guardians are encouraged to attend. You can contact all of the committee members by emailing pag@fremontopenplan.com. Make your annual Fund Drive contribution online Support and encourage ongoing learning about ways in which our community can lift up inclusivity, and fairness, and promote diverse representation and experiences on campus and beyond. Our work is to create partnerships and opportunities throughout the FOP community to learn and grow together in service to the FOP mission.
We do that through learning circles, book reads, events, and other kinds of ongoing support for teachers and all others in our FOP community. Lead coordinates with teachers to support special garden projects and organizes participation to maintain gardens throughout the year. Garden committee works in coordination with Maintenance committee to paint benches and tables as needed, troubleshoot irrigation, and maintain corporate sponsorship. Time commitment can be around 2-3 hours per month. Our academic program is grounded in the belief that children build knowledge by doing. Because productive interaction is central to an open education setting, social and emotional growth is considered a part of the curriculum. Children learn to respect differences, and teachers help them to navigate and resolve conflict so that all children can feel safe, valued and empowered. Similarities and differences between individuals and cultures are celebrated andexpanded upon as children begin to visualize a world outside of their own. Parent participation is an essential component of Open Plan. Our program recognizes that parents are a child’s most influential teacher, and the best education is the result of a full and genuine partnership between child, parent, teacher, and community. Parents who enroll their child here are making a serious commitment of their own time and energy.
Parents participate in numerous ways, from supporting instruction in the classroom, preparing instructional materials either on campus or at home, sharing personal expertise, working on committees, and organizing events. As friendships are forged, a unique and lasting community of families is formed. The cross-aging of children from different departments is another fundamental component of an Open Plan education. Cross-aging provides opportunities to build relationships, encourages responsibility within the community, and allows children to share skills and ideas. These multi-age experiences teach older children important lessons in role modeling, nurturing, and skill reinforcement, while younger children learn that they have value in the eyes of their esteemed older partners.
