I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list I love to travel. Many of my favorite childhood memories include family vacations. As an adult, I have been blessed with the ability to continue to travel. Travel gives me time to recharge and reconnect. Today, much of my travel revolves around a 13 year old's baseball schedule.

As I sit here writing this, I find myself again reflecting on how different travel looks compared to a year ago. Last year, I was boarding a flight to San Francisco.

A trip I typically take 4 - 6 times a year. When I am in the Bay area, my day is filled with work responsibilities. At night, I try to explore different parts of the city; trying new restaurants, visiting pop up exhibits (Museum of Ice Cream remains my favorite) or attending a theater performance. Last year was no different, I stayed outside of the city so my daily commute was by ferry. The highlight of the trip was scoring a last minute ticket to see Hamilton. I had been trying for three years to see the show.

I wasn't willing to spend $300-$500 per ticket in New York, when the traveling cast was near my hometown, tickets were impossible to get and if you were lucky enough you paid $200 minimum. When the opportunity to sit 15 rows from the stage for $50 presented itself, I couldn't say no. Little did I know that trip would be my last time on an airplane for more than a year. 2020 brought changes to how we do just about everything in our day to day lives. It's no surprise that how we travel changed too. When it became clear that I may not be visiting the west coast for the foreseeable future, I knew I had to get creative about how, why and when I travel.

I am excited that 2021 will bring new road trip and weekend adventures. This year our travels will be closer to home and will allow us to explore more of our local attractions. As more and more of the country begins to reopen, I encourage you to get out and explore the gems that are close to home and that you may have taken for granted. Many towns have brewery tours, food tours, trolley tours, and Segway tours. Group tours not your thing? Consider visiting a local museum or gallery.
