Un Aims To Bring Multilateralism Back As It Adopts Pact For The Future
UN member countries adopt blueprint for the future to tackle wars, environmental threats and technological challenges facing humanity. The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a “Pact for the Future”, which UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described as a landmark agreement that is a “step-change towards more effective, inclusive, networked multilateralism”. The pact, which also includes an annex on working towards a responsible and sustainable digital future, was adopted without a vote on Sunday at the start of a two-day Summit of the Future. The agreement came after some nine months of negotiations. “We are here to bring multilateralism back from the brink,” Guterres told the summit. As an opener for the annual high-level week of the UN General Assembly, which begins on Tuesday, dozens of heads of state and government had gathered for the adoption of the pact.

“Now it is our common destiny to walk through it. That demands not just agreement, but action.” At the Summit of the Future on 22 September 2024, world leaders adopted the Pact for the Future and its annexes: the Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations. This historic agreement is the culmination of years of inclusive dialogue and collaboration aimed at modernizing international cooperation to address today’s realities and prepare for tomorrow’s challenges. The Pact for the Future is the most comprehensive international agreement in decades, covering entirely new areas while also resolving issues that have long stalled consensus. Its primary objective is to ensure that international institutions are equipped to navigate a world vastly different from the one in which they were created.
As UN Secretary-General António Guterres observed, “We cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents.” The Pact reaffirms global commitment to the United Nations, the international system, and the principles of international law. It envisions a world where the international system delivers on its promises, reflects the diversity of today’s global landscape, and leverages the collective strength of governments, civil society, and other key partners. “The Pact for the Future, together with the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations, unlocks new opportunities and untapped potential,” said Secretary-General Guterres during the Summit of the Future. The President of the General Assembly hailed the Pact as a foundation for “a sustainable, just, and peaceful global order – for all peoples and nations.” The Pact addresses a wide array of critical global issues, with commitments to:

At the 79th UN General Assembly, world leaders adopted the Pact for the Future, a landmark commitment to tackle global challenges through multilateralism. Action 5 of the pact focuses on making the global trading system a driver of sustainable development, emphasizing export-led growth and preferential trade access for developing countries—crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) plays a central role in advancing these principles, promoting fair and inclusive commerce that supports the Global South while addressing the growing intersection between trade, climate change and digital... The rise of the Global South is reshaping global power dynamics, with developing nations playing an increasingly significant role in international trade and economic governance. Calls for reform - such as Brazil’s recent push for a more inclusive global governance system at the G20 - underscore the South’s growing influence. This shift offers opportunities for developing countries to access global supply chains, partnerships and investments.
However, these must be carefully managed to ensure that growth is sustainable and inclusive, aligning with the goals of the Pact for the Future. The alignment of trade policies with climate objectives is essential for sustainable development. UNCTAD has emphasized the need to integrate trade strategies into Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, promoting economic growth while addressing climate change. Sustainable trade can serve as a tool for both economic progress and environmental protection.
