un summit of the future outcomes and implications

“This summit is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reinvigorate global action…” After two years of preparation and over nine months of negotiations, world leaders gathered in New York at the “Summit of the Future.” They adopted the outcome document, “The Pact for the Future,” which... The summit took place at a very critical moment, as the world is witnessing one of the greatest humanitarian crises of the 21st century across the continents. In Gaza, more than 42,000 lives, most of them children and women, were lost in a war that destroyed the critical civilian infrastructure from its healthcare system to its education sector. Today, the absolute majority of the population does not have access to education. Nearly all Gazans are deprived of receiving healthcare services, and 96% of the population is on the brink of suffering from famine.

Yet, the catastrophic human effects of the war in Gaza continue, with civilians terrified and having no safe place to shelter from the ongoing bombing. The ample effects of the conflict are now extending to Lebanon, where a brutal attack took over 2,000 lives, displacing over one million people. The unfolding developments in Lebanon leave the entire Lebanese population at grave risk of potential atrocities. The international community’s ability to prevent the unfolding disaster is in question. Similarly, we have been witnessing the devastating impact of the ongoing war in Ukraine on civilian lives for the last two years. In Sudan, a civil war is causing tremendous human suffering.

The crimes against humanity in Myanmar are still happening with no path to accountability. The Summit of the Future in September, 2024, produced an inter-governmentally negotiated, action-oriented Pact for the Future (Resolution A/RES/79/1) with chapters on: 1) Sustainable development and financing for development; 2) International peace and security; 3) Science, technology and innovation and digital cooperation; 4) Youth and future generations; and 5) Transforming global governance. The Summit will also produced a global digital compact and a declaration on future generations (Resolution 76/307) that were annexed to the Pact. Many saw the UN Summit of the Future as the moment of truth for the United Nations and its plans for the world. Joris Larik, Assistant Professor of Comparative, EU and International Law, explains the results.

War, inequality, poverty, climate change: the world faces pressing problems that call for good global cooperation and agreements. With the eyes of the international community turned to the UN, will it ever manage to take the lead and bring about positive change? Sunday 22 and Monday 23 September were an important litmus test: the UN Summit of the Future in New York Joris Larik specialises in global governance and EU external relations law. He is also a co-founder of the Global Governance Innovation Network (GGIN). He and researchers from the US think tank Stimson Center wrote a report and policy recommendations for the summit.

‘This Summit of the Future was the culmination of a process that has been underway for four years, a moment of truth for the United Nations and global governance. That process began in 2020 with the UN’s 75th Anniversary Declaration, followed a year later by the “Our Common Agenda” report, in which Secretary-General António Guterres came with concrete proposals for making the world... A bold move. ‘At the Summit of the Future this year, the 193 UN member states had to flesh out these proposals into a plan, a kind of roadmap for the future of the international community: the... Mind you, this is a political document and not an international treaty.’ VIENNA, 3 October 2024 – UNIS Vienna Director Martin Nesirky opened the event by highlighting the significance of the Summit of the Future, held in September at UN Headquarters in New York.

The summit gathered together global leaders to recommit to the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and to agree on concrete solutions to the pressing challenges humanity is facing. At the summit, Member States adopted a ‘Pact for the Future’ that includes two annexes – the first is the Global Digital Compact which aims to foster an inclusive, open, and secure digital space... The second annex – the Declaration on Future Generations – adopts guiding principles, commitments, and actions to promote international stability for those generations not yet born. Nesirky emphasized the importance of keeping the Pact’s momentum with “Member States and Vienna-based UN organizations having a key role to play”. Loïc Simonet, researcher at the Austrian Institute for International Affairs, moderated the panel discussion and introduced the invited experts and practitioners of the UN system, all of whom hold diverse profiles and backgrounds. The panel consisted of Ambassador Alexander Marschik, Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations in New York, Rebecca Jovin, Chief of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) in Vienna, Markus Wane,...

Ambassador Marschik alluded to one of the most significant impacts of the summit: the signed commitment of 193 Member States: “If there is a commitment among all Member States to come together to use...
