For others, it’s an opportunity to redefine how students learn.

According to a recent survey by my own company, Prosper Insights & Analytics, more than one in three U.S. adults say they already use generative AI tools; a figure that climbs even higher among Gen-Z and Millennials. This generational divide is playing out in classrooms everywhere, where students are being accused of AI-assisted plagiarism and facing strict academic consequences, sometimes only to be found innocent. David Brudenell, executive director at Decidr, believes this moment signals the beginning of a new kind of literacy, not the end of learning as we know it. AI, he says, should be treated the same way past generations embraced the calculator or the internet: as an inevitable and essential skill. Banning it, he argues, is like “banning the internet in 2000 or the calculator in 1985.”

AI Demands More Thinking, Not Less of It Artificial intelligence can summarize text, find bugs in code, and create images. It can even record and summarize panels at a conference.* New tools and use cases are being developed as we speak, each model more powerful than the last. In its third instance, the AI+Education Summit hosted by the Stanford Accelerator for Learning and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) brought together researchers, educators, tech developers, and policymakers for pivotal conversations... The convening showcased cutting-edge, research-based applications of AI in learning and facilitated dialogue about how to ensure AI serves education ethically, responsibly, and equitably.

The summit was guided by big questions: What is the future of learning we aspire to? What makes us uniquely human? How do we center humanity in our learning and AI ecosystems? How can research best support a bright future of learning? The conference featured four expert panels and two rounds of speed talks followed by small group discussions for attendees across sectors to share ideas, opportunities, and challenges. During the lunch hour, AI and education seed grant recipients funded by the Accelerator and HAI shared posters with their in-progress research projects.

Historically, education has always been a manual process. Teachers were responsible for delivering lessons, assessing student progress, and managing classroom environments. However, the rise of digital technology paved the way for online learning platforms, digital classrooms, and massive open online courses (MOOCs), all of which made learning more accessible. But the next leap, the integration of AI, promises to take these advances to an entirely new level. The shift from traditional to AI-powered education isn’t just about digital tools.

It’s about creating a learning environment that is more responsive, adaptive, and efficient. The classroom of the future, powered by AI, will be one where students receive personalized learning experiences, teachers become more facilitators than lecturers, and administrative tasks are handled by smart systems. One of the most exciting aspects of AI in education is its ability to deliver personalized learning experiences. Every student has a unique learning style, pace, and set of strengths and weaknesses. Traditional education systems often struggle to meet these individual needs due to class size, limited resources, and the one-size-fits-all approach. AI has the potential to change that.

From small classroom changes to larger system-wide strategies, AI is becoming part of the future of education. The conversation is no longer “if” but “how” as institutions consider what that means for students, educators, and institutions.
