I am thoroughly impressed!I wanted my granddaughter (5 yrs.) to use her iPad for something other than watching videos and playing games. There are a huge number of age appropriate (you choose the age) books which are wonderfully narrated. The app allows any five books to be placed in a backpack (downloaded) so children can ‘read’ even when offline. There are ‘stickers’ given as rewards after every book that is ‘read.’This app is totally worth the money! Thank you! It's great to hear that you are loving the experience.
We welcome hearing from our customers, so if there is anything in particular you would love to see (and is not there yet), please email us at skybrary@rif.org. I am 20 years older than the target market.
I'm checking the app out because I'm a fan of LeVar Burton and the original tv series. So far I really like how it's done. There are several interactive kid books apps, but this one has a good amount of content and it's organized well in a fun interactive way -- with themed islands in the sky you can... Of course, the app also has LeVar Burton, including education videos with him on location. Looks like he had tonnes of fun making the app too. And Yeah, it does lack the complete original theme song... I'm guessing the rights were owned by PBS or something.I'd definitely recommend this app for kids.A couple technical points:-The app is crashing when I try to watch videos.
Maybe the streaming server is overloaded right now with requests. That bug can be fixed.- The icon needs work. You shouldnt put the app name or title text in the icon itself. The app name is always going to be under it, or beside it, anyways. The balloon is cool, but ambiguous in that picture. Also should incorporate a book some how.
Honestly, branding and recognizability is really important -- I'd consider even putting LeVar's photo/head in the icon if it can be done well. I am 20 years older than the target market. We frequently have to reload the app as it freezes often and unable to load books. Otherwise it is a great app with lots of selections. Review by Mieke VanderBorght , Common Sense Education | Updated June 20, 2012 Kids can "go anywhere, be anything" with vast book and video library Pros: Access hundreds of videos and real books, all in one easy-to-use app on a single device. Cons: There aren't many cons, but there could be more features that take advantage of the tablet medium. Bottom Line: Wonderful and practical way to get kids excited about learning and reading -- the greatness of the classic TV series, updated for the 21st century.
