Students who want to take ISM go through a selection and application process and are chosen to participate in this exciting, rigorous elective. They select careers or topics of study, and the ISM teacher helps students narrow down and focus this topic of study. Students conduct informational interviews with professionals in this chosen field and from this process, they carefully choose a mentor with whom to work for the remainder of the year (usually second semester). The ISM teacher guides and helps the students with this important interview and mentor selection process. The ISM teacher follows each student's progress closely, communicates often with mentors, and makes sure each student stays task-committed. "Aim for success, not perfection. Ananya Gosain is a junior at Frisco Reedy High School who is studying Forensic Psychiatry this year in ISM. This interest has developed over time through continued exposure to the news and competing in a Forensic Science competition her sophomore year. She is interested to learn about what goes through the mind of a criminal, and in order to do so, she must learn that of a professional in the field as well.
Other than that, likes to spend her free time googling absurd criminal cases, spending time with family and friends, and, if time allows, catching up on a good mystery novel. Frisco ISD’s Independent Study and Mentorship is a program for which students must apply, interview, and be recommended during their junior and/or senior year. Gifted and high achieving students focus their study on a topic or career of their choice. They develop a research portfolio that has a collection of resources including interviews and observations with people who work in their chosen field or topic of study. Students work on time management, communication, research, goal setting, various soft skills, and presentation skills. During the spring semester, students work with mentors at their mentor’s place of business to gain "real world" experience and also to create an advanced product related to their topic.

Out of these things, one thing that caused me to reflect on myself the most was the speech. As simple as the task had originally sounded, it was a struggle for me to lay out my thoughts the way I was most satisfied with. This caused me to discover something about myself that had not entered my mind before: fear of failure. I was trying too hard to formulate the “perfect” speech by trying to place specific words in a certain way, rather than just speaking straight from my experiences, as I should. Therefore, my goal for next week is to deliver my speech and be open minded to the constructive criticisms my classmates and teacher provide me with.
I truly hope that through this I can get a better idea of what I need to focus on when delivering a speech. In addition to public speaking, one thing that circulated around my mind was how difficult it is going to be to find a Forensic Psychiatrist willing to mentor me. I remembered my health science teacher telling me last year how the career field of psychiatry in general is a very seclusive field, since it deals with a person’s mental health, and thus highly... This week in ISM, the resume was introduced, thus starting the process of finding professionals to contact later on. This involved my slightly indecisive personality to shine by spending thirty minutes looking for the most suitable resume template and another thirty minutes creating color palettes to decide which two would best fit the... The two colors that were finally decided upon were a forest green color and a violet color.
These colors were chosen, because they were some of the first to come to mind when I was thinking of Forensic Psychiatry. Also, in a more symbolic sense, the green and violet were chosen to come across as determined yet reliable (respectively). In addition to that, the second research assessment consisted most of the ISM work times this week. Through this, I was able to look more into Forensic Psychiatry regarding ethics. This spurred the realization that there is a long list of controversies in the field that are addressed in different ways depending on each case. Therefore, the goal for this week is to look more into case-based reports on the evaluation process done by a Forensic Psychiatrist.
In regards to the goals from last week, creating a calendar to follow was definitely helpful in getting work done, so that is definitely going to be something to continue. On the other hand, there was not much progress on building my LinkedIn page. It was, however, a tool I often times came back to for finding possible mentors in the area. Another goal for this week is to finish the rough draft of my resume and use it to gain more of an idea of what to include on LinkedIn. This week had been definitely productive as many things were accomplished. For example, all my research was completed, and efforts were towards beginning to write the research paper. On top of this, much time was spent towards preparing for and presenting the final presentation speech towards the end of the week. The latter had definitely been quite the task to prep for, because it made me reflect on every single thing that was experiences this year and made for a very interesting overall journey to...
A goal I have for this week is to go on a mentor visit with Dr. Vats and hand her my ISM binder next week, as our schedules had classed the week prior. This will be done by clearing up my schedule so it will be easily workable around hers as well. Furthermore, I want to finish the draft of the entire research paper by this week so Dr. Vats and I would be able to review it together. This will be done, by actively setting aside two hours after school everyday, similar to what I have been doing because it has been so successful.
