Ananya Gosain is a junior at Frisco Reedy High School who is studying Forensic Psychiatry this year in ISM. This interest has developed over time through continued exposure to the news and competing in a Forensic Science competition her sophomore year. She is interested to learn about what goes through the mind of a criminal, and in order to do so, she must learn that of a professional in the field as well. Other than that, likes to spend her free time googling absurd criminal cases, spending time with family and friends, and, if time allows, catching up on a good mystery novel. "Aim for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn new things and move forward with your life."
Students who want to take ISM go through a selection and application process and are chosen to participate in this exciting, rigorous elective. They select careers or topics of study, and the ISM teacher helps students narrow down and focus this topic of study. Students conduct informational interviews with professionals in this chosen field and from this process, they carefully choose a mentor with whom to work for the remainder of the year (usually second semester). The ISM teacher guides and helps the students with this important interview and mentor selection process. The course includes intense research, original idea generation, original product design, and written analysis of research. Furthermore, the ISM teacher works with the students on professionalism, time management, effective oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, interviewing, resume writing, and goal setting to help prepare these students for success in their...

This week had been very eventful, with numerous things that were accomplished. Three of the biggest ones were finally turning in the original work, going on the first mentor visit (turned out to be more of an observation), and presenting a semester’s worth of work at... Reflecting on the mentor visit specifically, it was a very special and unique experience sit down during an actual medical staff meeting and a real evaluation with a criminal (two things I would have... This really gave much insight to one day in a field that currently piques my interest, and it can definitely be said that my passion for it had not died down.

With the biggest events of the first semester over, my head is now fully concentrated on the second. The goals for this week, thereby, are to begin brainstorming different ideas for final product and schedule a second mentor visit. The plan to accomplish this is by researching specific areas of Forensic Psychiatry to see if there are any current ideas in the field that are gaining traction. For the second goal, the plan is to order my schedule for the next month to see when I will be able to meet, further specifying certain dates. We are also in the midst of discussing dates for a court case that he offered me to sit in on, so I will discuss that with him in more detail as well.

This week had been successful in terms of completing the goals from last week.
I was able to actively prepare and give my speech as well as finalize what what to do for original work. Both mentors were able to go through the product proposal and help me fix errors while further clarifying different concepts, like knowing between antipsychotic and anti-anxiety medicine. Since these were completed successfully, my goals for next week are based off of these ones. Therefore, next week will begin the watching and rewatching of the original work speech and go through what was fixed from the last one and what still needs work. This will be done by taking notes as I go on as well, so nothing is missed. During the speech, it was realized that I had begun rambling a lot to reach the time, so that is definitely something that will be kept in mind while doing this.
Also, the plan is to contact both mentors to schedule another mentor visit or observation and to also begin working on the first phase of research for final product, which is how to write... This will be done by asking my mentors if I could read through anything they have written to have a better grasp of its format as well as conduct my own research by googling. Effortlessly add and arrange your text, visuals, buttons and even entire sections. My name is Amishi and I am a current senior studying Public Health Sciences with a writing minor. Since I was a young girl, I have had two main passions in life: science and writing. Historically, the two are irreconcilable. My high school heavily instilled in its students a mentality I do not agree with. It was ingrained in us that we had to be really good at one thing and put all our energy towards that one thing.
This gave room to major stereotyping. I was taking 4-6 AP classes a year and quickly became integrated in the "STEM inclined students." This became a looking glass self moment; people saw me as someone who was decently good at... Meanwhile, I had a hidden journal filled with poetry, daily thoughts, and embarrassing quotes. I never admit to anyone that I loved writing as it seemingly went against the academic interests that defined me. It wasn't until college that I started to share my writing and feel comfortable sharing it. I realized writing was a form integrated in everything we do as pre-med students, but the issue is that nobody in STEM fields enjoy the writing they do.
Rather, they get caught up in the technicalities. It was upon this realization that I picked up a job in the statistics department to improve integration of science and writing by assigning short narrative prompts instructing students to explain a statistics concept... This position allowed me to quickly learn that the writing I knew and loved was inaccessible to many in STEM fields due to the rigidity with which writing is taught when we are children. I started to utilize a new approach in my office hours; I would have students tell me their ideas as a story. Anyone sitting there could tell you how much engagement improved upon using a storytelling approach to even the dullest of concepts - linear regressions, confidence intervals. Thus, came about the passion I like to call "writing about science in non-scientific ways."
When my grandma was battling breast cancer and a double-knee replacement, I found myself writing a lot to help cope with the emotional toll of seeing a family member in the hospital. Then, my family found out my uncle had multiple stage four tumors in his brain. I found myself journaling more than I ever have. My parents seemed to only come to us with bad news about his health. The brain tumor have him a type of aphasia - he would look at objects and confidently call them the wrong name. The doctors at this point stopped seeing him seriously and he was no longer a stakeholder in his own health.
There was a constant burning question at the back of my mind everyday: is anybody asking him how he truly feels? This experience is what led me to explore the field of narrative medicine and the benefits it possesses. In terms of my career, I hope to one day be an OB/GYN. The field itself has seen a lack of narrative-centric practice, and I believe in the power of using a patient's story to drive the trajectory of their care. I have listed several areas of the field of women's health that are of interest to me and could benefit from a more narrative-focused lens in care. Pregnancy Experiences for LGBTQ+ Populations
