Branko Brkic Author At Alliance Magazine
I see a sector that is ready for a set of truly big ideas, and with an energy and urgency to make those ideas welcome. At the Innovations in International Philanthropy Symposium in Cambridge, MA … Branko Brkic (born 28 April 1962) is a Serbian-born[1] South African editor and publisher. He is currently the founder and leader of Project Kontinuum,[2] a global initiative established in 2024.[3][4][5] Brkic co-founded Daily Maverick in 2009,[6] a South African online news daily and weekly newspaper, DM168.[7] He served as its editor-in-chief[8] until October 2024.[9][10] Under his leadership, Daily Maverick grew significantly.[11] Prior to this,... He was the founder, publisher and editor of Maverick magazine from 2005 to 2008[12] and Empire magazine from 2007 to 2008.[13] Before immigrating to South Africa in 1991, he was a book publisher in...
British magazine New African named Brkic as one of the Most Influential Africans in Media in 2014[15] and again in 2023.[16] He received the Nat Nakasa Award for Media Integrity in 2018[17] for his... Courage, creativity and collaboration to build a resilient future were the operating words and they matched the mood. There was also a dark shadow hanging over the proceedings, provided courtesy of the attempt to cancel Jimmy Kimmel Live just the evening before the conference. We didn’t know at the time that he would be reinstated a few days later. The symposium urged funders to shift power, defend democracy, and invest in equity-driven systems change. Yet, how can any of these ambitions be realized if the information ecosystem that underpins them is crumbling? My point is that not only democracies, but entire civilizations perish in darkness; it is no hyperbole in our current context.
We are living in a state of perpetual flux, global uncertainty, and in an age of insecurity where the future is often too dark to see. Branko Brkic is founder of PROJECT KONTINUUM, a global initiative to advance journalism, media innovation, and sustainability. He is former Editor-in-Chief of Daily Maverick, South Africa’s leading online daily which he co-founded in 2009. Branko Brkic is the leader of Project Kontinuum, a global initiative to advance journalism, media innovation and sustainability. Its first campaign was for World News Day in 2025 where the theme was ‘Choose Truth’, aimed at reaffirming journalism’s critical role around the world. Eight hundred publishing houses in 100 countries took part. Branko, who is founding editor of the Daily Maverick an online newspaper in South Africa, says media have no choice but to embrace Media and Information Literacy if they want to secure their future.
This week I had a chance to sit down with the legendary South African editor and innovator in journalism, Branko Brkic, the founder of The Daily Maverick, which is a host newsroom for our... To mark World News Day tomorrow and to sound the alarm on the crisis in journalism that is unfolding not just here in the United States but in every corner of the globe he... “Perhaps the biggest issue that all of us right now are concerned about is the frontal attack on truth and the meaning of truth,” said Branko. “And this is basically the beginning of a much longer campaign whose goal is to educate people and readers all over the world and to actually give a certain level of encouragement to our... Indeed, as he shared with some poignant insights in the tone of a boxer who has gone the distance across four decades in the ring of journalism, Branko is stepping down from the helm... He’s dedicating himself to draw attention to a fact we have been sharing in this newsletter for quite a few years now: It is not just journalism that is under attack, but truth itself.
Branko and I are both 40-year veterans of journalism, both founders who have recently decided to step aside from leadership roles and both watching our hair turn gray as we stare out across the... In such a moment of peril, the news media’s duty, its daily delivery of truth, and indeed its very existence, become more consequential than ever before.
