Each semester, CMU students, representing various majors and grade levels, work in a variety of Legislative, Executive, and special interest offices. This is a tremendous opportunity for CMU students to learn the critical role government plays on campus and in our communities. We appreciate that many of our Capital Chippewa alumni serve as mentors for these interns, sharing their experiences and expertise through networking events throughout the semester. All students, regardless of major and year, are encouraged to apply.

Internships are available during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. The program takes place in Lansing, Michigan with internships available in a variety of legislative, governmental, and special interest offices.

Academic credit can also be obtained with approval from a faculty advisor. Responsibilities vary by the type of office the student interns within. Common responsibilities across all offices may include, but are not limited to: Many legislative office internships will involve significant research into specific policy areas such as education, health, taxes, and transportation that will depend upon the individual legislator’s committee assignments.

Many state department internships will involve work specifically related to that department’s functions such as human resources management, environmental protection, or social work as a few examples.
