Try JSTOR's free online course, Research Basics! Research Basics is a free, self-paced online research skills course intended to help you build your research skills and prepare for college work. The course consists of three modules focused on effective searching, establishing credibility, and citing scholarly work.

Each module has three sections, and each section includes a 10-minute video overview of the topic. After watching video, use a set of practice questions to test what you've learned and then take an assessment quiz for the full module. Upon the successful completion of a module quiz, you earn a virtual badge! JSTOR Daily (daily.jstor.org) is an online magazine that provides context and background to news stories and current affairs. It publishes short and long posts from journalists and academics, and all pieces link to journal articles on JSTOR for deeper reading. We're constantly updating the site with blog posts, columns, long-form essays, and interviews with a scholars, so there's always plenty of new material.

JSTOR provides access to scholarly journal articles, books, and primary sources, with particular strength in the humanities and social sciences. You can enter keywords or exact phrases (using quotation marks) in the main search box, combine terms with Boolean operators such as AND, OR, and NOT, and use filters like Content Type, Publication Date,... Tutorials may contain information that is library-specific and not applicable to our Library. Citations are a crucial part of the research process, as citing a source is a way of giving credit to other ideas that you used to develop your research. A citation is a short way to identify a published work and it includes the information that your reader would need to find the source. Typically that consists of the author’s name, title of the work, publication date, publishing company, among other format-specific information. Citations can include primary and secondary sources. There are many citation styles, each has slightly different structures for how the source information is ordered and formatted.

JSTOR provides auto-generated pre-formatted citations in MLA, APA, and Chicago styles. Citation style varies by academic discipline and within some disciplines, more than one style is common. However, make sure you are consistent with a single style through your research project. Check with your instructor to determine what style to use for your specific course.
