The information on this page provides a guide for the website of the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), published on 12 May 2022. The REF is the system for assessing the quality of research in publicly funded UK higher education institutions (HEIs).
For REF 2021, 157 HEIs made submissions into 34 subject-based units of assessment (UOAs). The submissions were assessed by panels of experts, who produced an overall quality profile for each submission. Each overall quality profile shows the proportion of research activity judged by the panels to have met each of the four starred quality levels in steps of 1%. The results were published on 12 May 2022. The results for each submission can be viewed on this website either by UOA or by institution. A spreadsheet containing all the results can also be downloaded.
For each submission, the results show the overall quality profile, the three sub-profiles (for each of outputs, impact and environment) and the FTE of category A staff in the submission. For staff, you can find the content that was previously on those websites and also the content from the Research Administration and Management Hub, the Trusted Research Hub, and the Research Culture Toolkit, in...
If you are a member of staff or a student, you can find the content you need on OxIntranet, the University’s new Oxford-wide intranet. Please note you will need Single Sign On (SSO) credentials to access OxIntranet. The University of Oxford’s results in REF 2021 are given below. Results are shown as the percentage of the submission achieving the following starred levels: 4* – quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour3* – quality that is internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour, but which falls short if the highest standards... Unclassified (U/C) – Quality that falls below the standard of nationally recognised work, or work which does not meet the published definition of research for the purposes of this assessment.
The overall results for the University as a whole are given as an FTE-weighted average of the subject results. The table then shows the results for each subject area submission. We also show the total number of full time equivalent (FTE) staff submitted for each subject.
