Find out more about cookies and how we use them. document.write('<span class="close" title="Close">x<\/span>'); Major milestone reached in national assessment of research, as the UK funding bodies receive submissions at revised deadline of 31 March 2021. 157 universities are participating in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021. Over 185,000 research outputs have been submitted for assessment by expert panels.

The assessment will take place over the coming year. Around 6,700 case studies, describing specific examples of research impact, will also be reviewed. Over 76,000 staff have been returned in the exercise, which is a 46 per cent increase since REF 2014. This increase is in line with changes to the way that staff are submitted, moving from a selective approach in that exercise to submitting all staff with significant responsibility for research in REF 2021. The original submission deadline in November 2020 was revised last year, in response to the effects of COVID-19. Further revisions to the exercise have also been introduced, that aim to take account of the effects on REF submissions.

These included the option to request an extension for providing the narrative parts of submissions. This measure has given support where it’s been needed, with around 3 per cent of impact case studies and 5 per cent of environment statements due to be submitted in the next six weeks. The contents of this page refer to details that were amended after the exercise was paused in response to COVID-19. The current release of the system will allow universities to enter data in all REF submission forms, in advance of the submission deadline in November 2020. The system development has been informed by survey feedback provided by institutions at the end of the pilot phase of the software. The final remaining aspects of the system will be developed according to the published timetable and the system will continue to be monitored and updated in response to user feedback. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for assessing the excellence of research in UK higher education providers (HEPs). The REF outcomes are used to inform the allocation of around £2 billion per year of public funding for universities’ research.

The REF was first carried out in 2014, replacing the previous Research Assessment Exercise.
