Over 185,000 research outputs have been submitted for assessment by expert panels.

The assessment will take place over the coming year. Around 6,700 case studies, describing specific examples of research impact, will also be reviewed. Over 76,000 staff have been returned in the exercise, which is a 46 per cent increase since REF 2014. This increase is in line with changes to the way that staff are submitted, moving from a selective approach in that exercise to submitting all staff with significant responsibility for research in REF 2021. The original submission deadline in November 2020 was revised last year, in response to the effects of COVID-19. Further revisions to the exercise have also been introduced, that aim to take account of the effects on REF submissions.

These included the option to request an extension for providing the narrative parts of submissions. This measure has given support where it’s been needed, with around 3 per cent of impact case studies and 5 per cent of environment statements due to be submitted in the next six weeks. Four in five outputs judged to be either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ The latest iteration of the UK’s national research audit has fulfilled its aim to identify research quality across the whole system, says David Sweeney Greater weighting helps medical institutions in particular improve overall positions Medicine-focused institutions perform strongly on metric given weighting in latest round of Research Excellence Framework

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the system run by the UK higher education funding bodies to assess the quality of research taking place in UK higher education institutions. The most recent REF was 2021, and we are currently in the REF 2029 cycle. The REF assesses the quality of an institution’s research outputs, impacts and environment by a process of peer review, carried out by expert disciplinary panels made up of senior academics, international representatives, and research... Research outputs, impacts and environment are graded from 4* (‘world-leading’) to 1* (‘recognised nationally’).

In May 2022, the UK higher education funding bodies published the outcomes of REF 2021, which demonstrate that the Royal College of Art continues to be a world-leading research-intensive institution. The results show that: The RCA submitted 100 per cent of its staff to REF 2021, a total of 174 members of staff and some 300 outputs, of which many were practice-based outputs (exhibitions, artefacts, installations) presented in... Nine impact case studies were submitted, demonstrating the breadth and range as well as the impact of RCA research. The REF website uses cookies to make the site more efficient. These data are available for all panels and by main panel. Where relevant, the numbers submitted to REF 2014 are also shown. In line with the new requirement for HEIs to return all staff with significant responsibility for research in REF 2021, the total number of full-time equivalent (FTE) staff returned has increased by 46 per... The University of Suffolk is proud to have made a first submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) in 2021 and to have received an outstanding outcome.

The published REF 2021 results indicate that the University produces world-leading and internationally excellent research, as measured by the latest REF assessment. The REF evaluates both the quality and impact of research at UK universities to provide an independent confirmation of the strength of the University’s research and how it makes a real difference nationally and... The outcome of the University of Suffolk’s submission to REF 2021 was a tremendous achievement for the University given that it relatively recently gained independence as a university in 2016. The University made its first REF submission in Social Work and Social Policy (UoA 20). Twelve per cent of the University’s research outputs were rated as 4* quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance, and rigour and 56% as 3* which are of a quality that is...
