Tom Perry Special Collections preserves and houses materials requiring great care to protect them and ensure their proper long-term use * Closed for devotional10:45 am –12:15 pm Founded in 1957, Special Collections at Brigham Young University began with 1,000 books, 50 manuscript collections, and one curator. Today the department is run by a staff of 20 assisted by 70 students working with the Harold B. Lee Library’s unique treasures.
From cuneiform tablets to the latest publications by contemporary Mormon authors, the holdings include more than 300,000 volumes of history’s rarest and most interesting books. We are also home to over 11,000 rich manuscript collections and 2.5 million photographs that allow you to experience the recent and distant past. Please pay us a visit and enrich your educational experience by delving into our treasures. Special Collections is named for L. Tom Perry, an apostle for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at the request of generous donors Aline and L. Sam Skaggs, through their ALSAM Foundation.
The Special Collections Foyer is open to the public as a receiving space for Special Collections and also houses small-case exhibits for browsing Check in at the desk when you arrive to meet with a curator. Tom Perry Special Collections Reference staff provides PDF scans, high-resolution tiffs, and digital surrogates of media: audiocassettes, VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, and reel-to-reel tapes. Copy requests may be made either in person or remotely through the Aeon system.

Tom Perry Special Collections is located on the first floor of the library, on the north side. The library entrance is on the third floor, so head down two flights of stairs or use the elevator. Overview of the different collections available at the Library The general collections include items in a variety of formats (books, audio/video, maps, databases, journals, etc.) and languages. Items can be found on the shelves, online, or in compact storage. Special Collections preserves fragile or rare books, manuscripts, and papers, as well as materials in selected collecting areas.
Materials may be accessed in the Special Collections Reading Room or, for digitized materials, online. The digital collections include scanned images of books, documents, photographs, and other materials, primarily from Special Collections, as well as research published by BYU faculty and students. The curatorial staff of the L. Tom Perry Special Collections dedicates a significant amount of time to the location and acquisition of materials that have potential research value. Their collection development activities are governed by Special Collections Coordinating Committee. The following policies detail the types of materials that we feel will have long-term historical value and that we will consider acquiring.

University Archives, a unit of the BYU Special Collections, is in the process of reviewing all archived material to ensure collections do not contain personal information that cannot be shared. This review only impacts University Archives materials. The Archives can still accommodate research requests, but at least 30 days' notice is appreciated. More time may be needed for larger requests.
