Dublin City University will welcome over 4,300 new undergraduates this September. The university has increased its intake across several high demand courses, resulting in points remaining the same or having dropped in some instances (Computing, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Psychology). Speaking about the CAO 2025 offers, Professor Daire Keogh, President of Dublin City University said: “I am delighted to see the continued growth in demand for DCU’s offering, which reflects the excellence of the University’s courses and the student experience. I am also pleased that we have been able to broaden opportunities this year by offering new courses and increasing capacity in high-demand programmes in science and computing subjects.”

I would add it would be categorical error of judgement to arrive at a conclusion that DCU's DNA relates to its establishment, a couple of decades ago. No. The amalgam of DCU is very much anchored into the origins of education policy for Ireland from St Pats in the 19th Century and the missionary college All Hallows and Mater Dei and the... Its multiple range orbit goes to USA/Australia/EU.
I would describe its orientation track and trace, as practices of grounded recognition; very prudent fiscal management etc. The old sites combined with new, particularly the underlying ethos of our educational pedagogy in early education, reliant on multi-site transfers within Ireland and international. With the current climate we are in, it is interesting to watch DCU's climb on the merit rankings. Certainly a university to watch. Over 4,300 new undergraduates - that’s a lot of freshers’ week pizzas and campus maps needed! 😁 Best of luck to all new students ☘️
Best of luck to all new students and those continuing their courses. Delighted that one of those 4,300 is my youngest, joining her brother in DCU Business School! Applications for third-level college courses are on track to reach a record high this year. New figures released by the Central Applications Office (CAO) show there were a total of 83,447 applications at the close of its exceptional application deadline this week, up from 77,049 at a similar stage... A breakdown of applications is not yet available but the increase is likely to reflect a combination of factors such as greater numbers of students of Leaving Cert age and, potentially, more applicants applying... Leaving Cert results are due to drop on aggregate this year as part of an effort to return grades to more normal levels following several years of grade inflation.
This will put applicants with results from recent years at an advantage compared to the class of 2025 in the race for points. The increase in applicant numbers this year may also place upward pressure on some high-demand CAO points courses. There has been a significant increase in the number of students applying for third level places via the Central Applications Office. This year's initial deadline was 5pm yesterday and by then 83,447 applications had been received. This compares to 77,049 registrations at this time last year. The strong rise is unusual and comes amid rising demographics at second level.
Since 2021, February application figures have hovered between 77,000 to just over 79,000. Prior to the enhancement of Leaving Cert grades which became embedded in the system from 2020 onwards the numbers of students securing 625 points were between 250-300. Post-Covid they have been about 1,250. Similarly with those securing 600 points plus. Pre-Covid they would have traditionally numbered about 1,250. Post-Covid they have grown to about 3,500.
The enhancement process has been unfair in many ways to the really high-achieving students who secured their five or six H1s from the initial marking process. They could not be enhanced as they were already on maximum marks. They were joined prior to the allocation of CAO places by those who secured the H2s in the original marking process who, following enhancement, were adjusted upwards to H1 grades. With more than 3,000 students bunched up at the 600-plus points level, it was not unusual over the past few years to find a handful of courses – dentistry in Trinity and UCC, and...
