In elective, one of the major projects that our class did was Genius Hour. Genius Hour is a project that involves you finding an idea that inspires you, and creating it. For instance, I wanted to learn how to draw a realistic hand. I had to make a video and slideshow presentation for what I did. I feel that this was my best work because I spent a lot of time on my final product, as well as the Ted Talk. I remember that I completely forgot about the Ted Talk, so I had to make a whole presentation in about 4 hours.

I ended up doing pretty well without using any notecards. I also feel that this was my best work because I learned a lot from the project, and can use what I learned in future projects. https://docs.google.com/a/oakgrovesd.net/presentation/d/1Fp_x3p1ImP5mCrQWybzUwi1VU5lpsrYvVED2-uHuLiE/edit?usp=sharing At AdVENTURE S.T.E.M. I had two core classes. One class was Social Studies and the other is ELA.

These were fun because we not only learned, but we did some fun projects and visited cool interactive sites. In social studies I did interactive learning on a site called mission-us.org. On Mission US, I had to control a digital person through their life during an important part of history. I learned about people from the times of slavery and many more historical events. I also did a play with my class mates. The play was set during the time of the American Revolution.

In ELA I used a site called typingweb.com. Typing web is a site that I had to type what I saw on the screen as fast and as accurate as I could. I had to be careful on how fast I was typing because if I made a mistake, I would get a lower percentage when I was done. You have to get up to 100% to finish. All this was turned in automatically, so that way my teacher could keep track of my progress.

Through Elective, we did three major projects, a hidden objects game, an action game, and a team game. A hidden objects game is where you have to find items in a certain background, and you learn about that object. An action game is when you allow the user of the game to have a player and interactive with the characters of the game in order to learn something. And a team game is where you (obviously) work with a team, and make at least three working levels, which all help players learn different aspects of a certain topic. For this page, the largest accomplishment would be the team game. I worked with two of my friends, Sally and Jenna.

I was the programmer of the game, Sally was the writer, and Jenna was the artist. We decided to make a game about the life of a Monarch Butterfly, the player has to go through many different tasks in order to help the butterfly survive. This is my largest accomplishment out of all the games I have done. And this is because I had time, and I really had an opportunity to make my game different. Because when we started with the hidden object and action games, there was not much time in order to make the game really different and cool. So when we had the time, I had a lot of ideas in order to make our game successful, and I spent most of my time going online and trying to find new pieces...

And throughout this process, is where I felt like I began to truly understand code. And I began to depend on myself in order to write the code, instead of continuously looking at code tutorials, and at that point, I began to feel really proud of myself, because of... I also finally understood some simple code, even though, at this rate, I should I understood the code that I write. Elective has been a relatively same thing for all these years: Code a game, present a game. However, because of that, the games that I make get better and better. I have enjoyed them a lot, and for a good reason.

Since it is the same thing for coding a game, it is a bit difficult to find one that I liked, but I think I liked the Team game. I made a hidden objects type game, and it was fun to add on to it and use stuff that I know from previous games to make the game. I worked with two other partners, and with all of us working together, we made a pretty good game. Elective is one of the most amazing subjects that the program has to offer. You get to use computers, learn about technology, and best of all, make your own coded video game! I know it sounds hard, and it is.

Don't worry though, once you get used to it, it is a breeze. We have to make three video games every year: A hidden object game, an action game, and a team game. The teacher is Mrs. Garcia. She doesn't have as much patients, but she is very kind, and generous. We also get to learn about Code.org, which is al ittle coding class.

You do it for an hour, then you aare able to be done. In elective, we created three games, during the schoolyear. This was the first one I made, a hidden object game called Rainforest Search. In this game, you learn about how a jaguar's diet affect its health. Message boxes appear each time you find one of its prey, telling you how that specific animal contributes to a part of its body. The process was long and at some points difficult, but all of it was worth it.

I started out by drawing a paper prototype of what I wanted my game to look like. Overtime, it changed a little. Then, I traced it on flash and created the background of all the scenes in my game. Next, I coded my game so that you could click on the hidden objects and get points. Finally, I added the last touches to my game, like a start and win and lose screen, and I presented it to the class. Please play it!

This was the second game I made this year, A Jaguar's Diet. In this game, it has the same learning topic as my first one, except, it's in the form of an action game. Also, there's a player and enemy, and the goal of the game is to move around, using the arrow keys, to collect all the animals. The porcess was the same as before, but this was harder because the code that we follow along with on the wiki wasn't working for the maze code, so I had to figure out... Evenutally, I got the game to work, and I was very proud of it. This game was a little different from the other two.

This is because it is a team game and it has more levels and components. This was much harder to make because if you have different levels, you need to adjust the code for it. My job in this game was the coder and artist. I drew most of the stuff and coded the game. My other team mates took care of all the writing and other work we had to do. The learning topic of this game is about math and biomes.

We use parts of a biome to represent a value that the player has to find. For our first level, it is a maze game. Our second level is a chase game, and the third is a hidden object. Please play to see what we have worked on! I think that "E" should be placed at the end of S.T.E.M. ELA is an important part of our education at AdVENTURE.

I have learned a lot in ELA this year. We have read some great books, such as Percy Jackson and The Lightning Theif, and Bud not Buddy. Through reading these books and the assignments given, I have improved my reading comprehension. I also did a lot of writing development skills. I learned how to write various types of essays. When reading The Lightning Theif, and Bud not Buddy, I was given assignments such as taking notes on scenes in the books.

I often collaborated in groups where we discussed our answers and compared them to eachothers. This helped lead me to better understanding of what I was reading. I also did tracking worksheets that help teach me to follow the time line of the information given in the books. Not only through worksheets did I develop my punctuation and grammar skills, but also my writing skills. This year I learned how to write essays. Cause and effect, reflective, and biography essays are the types of essays that I have learned to write.

It was a bit challenging to complete these essays, because they each had a specific requirement that I struggled on. With what I have learned and experienced this year, I hope to improve upon and develop my writing skills for next year. From my experiences this year in developing reading comprehension and essay writing skills, I have learned a lot. I hope to be able to use these skills in my next school year. Below are a couple links to some of the work I have done in this class.
