The University utilizes your Net ID to log into any portal application (GrizPortal, etc.) Your Net ID is set-up as two letters followed by numbers and finished with an e for employees. You can change your Net ID password on the Password Reset website. The University of Montana uses your network credentials to login to Box.

UM Box will be retired at the end of the Spring 2025 Semester as part of the Migration to Microsoft 365 project. The final day to access Box content will be August 29, 2025. This is where you could use a direct URL to send people to your organization in the Griz Hub system. Use all lower-case letters, no spaces and the only special character you can use is a dash (-). To keep it simple, we suggest writing out your organization name, in all lower-case with a dash (-) to separate any words.

Canvas is UM's online learning system. If you register for a distance-only (online) course, the course will be on Canvas. The majority of in-person courses use Canvas, too. You may find that you can access the required reading materials there, or even upload assignments and take quizzes. Faculty Affiliates are not University employees, but are associated with an academic department or organization of the University for the purposes of teaching or academic oversight. Those who hold the courtesy appointments typically contribute to the instructional, research, creative activity, or service functions of the University. As a visiting international scholar, you are considered a Faculty Affiliate.

To receive your UM ID's, you must work with your host department to complete the Faculty Affiliate Recommendation Form which your host department will then submit to the Office of the Provost. You will receive two ID's while attending University of Montana. These are your NetID and your 790 number. With your netID you can set up your email account and log into online services. Your 790 will be is used primarily for identification purposes. You will need your ID's to access your UM email, online account, and various other UM services and accounts.

It is very important you keep your ID's private as they are you identification at UM. You will need to login to GrizPortal before anything else, as this is where you will be asked to create your own password. Your NetID and password will be used to access all areas within the My UM website such as your student email, Canvas, the course catalog, the UM Housing application and much more. Log into your GrizPortal account using your NetID as your username. You can find your NetID using the online NetID Lookup Tool.
