PLEASE NOTE: If you would like to save any content from courses that are older than 18 months, you have several options. The first option is to download and save the content to your own computer. The second option is to import the content into a Blueprint Course in Moodle. For each course you teach, you can get a single Blueprint Course created. Instructors can use a Blueprint Course to create and store content for a course to be taught in a future semester. Students do not get enrolled in Blueprint Courses.
For instructions on how to request a Blueprint Course, please visit GROK 20175: Request a Blueprint Course. Are you a student? Blocks in Moodle are small content areas that contain important tools and functions for managing a Moodle course. Blocks are located in three places in Moodle: on the My Home page, at the bottom of the My Courses page, and in the block drawer.
The block drawer on the Moodle front page or in a Moodle course is an area where an instructor can add or access blocks. The block drawer is located on the Moodle sidebar at the right side of most Moodle pages. The blocks that appear in the sidebar may be different depending on whether the user is on the Moodle front page or the course page. Users with a teaching role in a course (including TAs) can add or remove blocks from the course block drawer. All user roles can add blocks to the My Home page. For instructions, see the article Adding a Block.
The following list of blocks are currently available for the My Home page and/or block drawer. The most commonly used are followed by an asterisk (*) and linked to more details in this article. Those not marked with an asterisk will link to the Moodle Docs information in a new tab, except for Panopto which links to the GROK article. After a block is added and while you are still in edit mode, you can click the ellipsis menu icon on the block to see the editing options: Using these settings, you can hide or show a block, or remove it from your course block drawer. Some blocks need to be configured.
Moodle is always in "edit mode" for those with editing permissions, such as an instructor. In each section, also known as topics, modules, or weeks, there are several options to add or edit content, and rearrange, delete, or hide content. The animation below shows the location of these functions, but they are also described in the text below. Under the section title, there are four features: move, hide/show, delete, and highlight. You can also click on the Edit Section to add a description and information to the section summary. Below the section summary, you can use the Create a learning activity or add files by either browsing or dragging/dropping files from your computer.
For more information on the types of learning activities you can add to a course, see GROK article 20159. The Faculty Technology Center (FTC) provides Moodle support by email, by phone, or live through Zoom. For contact information, please see the article Faculty Technology Center: LSU Overview. To connect through Zoom and for further information on support services and training, see the LSU Online & Continuing Education Faculty Resources & Support page. Crosslist & Split allows an instructor to manage their course sections effectively by either combining multiple courses into a single course shell, separating them into different course shells, or combining and splitting. This tool is designed to streamline the process of course management, ensuring that instructors can handle various teaching scenarios efficiently.
Students from different courses combined by cross-listing will be enrolled in new, separate groups in a new Moodle course shell. Posting grades in the new Moodle shell will submit correctly to each course (and section) without extra steps. NOTE: It is recommended that you crosslist or split your course(s) before importing materials or making any changes in the course(s). When the new course is created, any content will not carry over, and your original courses will be removed from Moodle. Once your new course(s) is created, you can then import or add any content. This process has multiple steps, so if you need assistance, contact the Faculty Technology Center (225-578-3375, option 2 or ftc@lsu.edu).
If you would like to incorporate lecture and lab sections of a course, see Moodle: Crosslist for Lab Sections (GROK #20688). If you would like to incorporate undergraduate and graduate courses, see Moodle: Crosslist for Undergrad and Graduate Courses (GROK #20691). If you would like to combine across terms (LSU A&M and LSU Online), see Moodle Cross-enrollment (GROK #20544). If you would like to combine courses with another instructor, see Moodle: Team Teach Request (GROK #20174). If you would like to undo a crosslist or split course, jump down to Undo Crosslist & Split Course. If you do not see the Workday Preferences block, see GROK 19791, Moodle: Course Tools: Adding a Block.
By default, Moodle courses are created 30 days prior to the first day of class and students are enrolled into the course 14 days prior to the first day of class. Instructors can change the timeframe of these processes, up to a limit of 60-days prior to the first day of class. Moodle courses at the 9000 level are not created by default. Click on Course preferences in the Workday Preferences block in the blocks drawer in the right side bar menu of the front page of Moodle. If you do not see the Workday Preferences block, you can add it via the following article: Moodle: Course Tools: Adding a Block The Faculty Technology Center (FTC) provides Moodle support by email, by phone, or live through Zoom.
