How can students and researchers go from an idea for a topic to researching it, narrowing it down, and finding appropriate resources? The first step is to choose a topic that interests you! If you’re not interested in your subject, you won’t be committed to the research. So let your curiosity be your guide from the outset.

If you’re new to JSTOR or the research process, I recommend you start with the “Using JSTOR to Start Your Research” guide. It will walk you through some of JSTOR’s basic functions, including how to save your work as you go. I also recommend “An Introduction to Searching on JSTOR,” which explains both the main Search bar and the Refine Results sidebar on the JSTOR homepage. Ready for more? Read on for a step-by-step guide to going deep with your search results. Using a sample research project, I’ll show you how to find the sources you’ll need to produce your best work.

For this sample project, I’m interested in learning more about how people in the past dealt with pandemics. That’s a pretty broad topic, so I need to narrow it down: instead of just saying “the past,” I need to decide on a period and/or a specific pandemic. I’ve heard of the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 before, but I don’t know much about it. Doing some cursory research online—Google searches, Wikipedia or Encyclopedia Britannica reading— I’ve learned that the pandemic was global (despite its name), so now I need to decide on a location as well. For now, I’ll look into the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 in the United States. Now that I know a few more specifics of my topic, I can form an early research question.

What am I trying to find out from my topic? When you first start your research, it’s okay for your research question to be somewhat broad. Once you do some background research you might narrow down your question to a specific location or group/community of people, or you might leave it as is. It depends on how in-depth you want to go. Writing a paper can be overwhelming. If you’re a student or researcher who is not familiar with JSTOR, we are here to help.

This guide will give you practical steps to use JSTOR to create searches that are based on your topic or assignment. Additionally, learn how to narrow your search to the best results for you and use other JSTOR features to help organize your research and writing. Scenario: you get a course assignment similar to the following: Using library research, identify a monument you want to research. Find at least five resources that give you a sense of that monument’s history: the event that precipitated the memorial, the origins of the memorial, any controversies surrounding the monument, etc. What is the dominant narrative this site tells and what is the subversive narrative that may be read between the lines? While all of the content on JSTOR is considered scholarly, some content may not be peer-reviewed.

Clarify with your instructor whether you need peer-reviewed items before starting your assignment research. First, we have to choose a monument. For our purposes, let’s talk about the Vietnam Memorial. You can use "Vietnam Memorial" as the keywords in your search. Once you've identified some keywords, the next thing you’ll want to do is search the term to get a sense of what's available. Start by going to jstor.org and entering your keyword "Vietnam Memorial" in the search box.

JSTOR JSTOR provides an archive of important scholarly journal literature in nearly all the humanities and social sciences disciplines.

A moving end-date wall excludes the most recent 2-5 years of most journals. Now includes all images from Artstor. JSTOR is a database with articles and other resources spanning many subject areas in the humanities and the social sciences.
