Others take their skills into graduate school, nonprofit leadership, government roles, or private industry. If you want to make a difference in the lives of learners and communities, the Educational Studies Minor is a strong foundation. It prepares you for teaching, graduate work, or a career in educational advocacy and beyond. The Educational Studies Minor curriculum is designed to complement any major. This non-certification program introduces you to the educational system and explores why it works the way it does. Through historical, psychological, and philosophical perspectives, you’ll study education as a social and cultural force, gaining insight into its impact on individuals and society.

This minor gives you a deep understanding of education’s role in shaping society while keeping your options open. Pair it with any major to build a foundation for graduate study, teacher certification programs, or careers in educational advocacy, nonprofit leadership, policy, and more. You’ll leave Gettysburg ready to make a meaningful difference in classrooms and communities alike. Gettysburg College is an approved teacher education provider through the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Traditional Teacher Certification candidates complete coursework and field experiences designed to meet the State Board of Education’s rigorous standards. Graduates who meet program and testing requirements will be recommended for certification and prepared to lead in classrooms across the country.

Alternate routes to teacher certification are also available. The Educational Technology department at Gettysburg College is soliciting applications from rising sophomores and juniors for the Digital Technology Summer Fellows (DTSF) program. The Educational Studies Program offers a dynamic minor that combines the best of a liberal arts education with real-world preparation. You’ll engage deeply with social issues and big intellectual questions while exploring diverse perspectives and learning to think critically about complex ideas. At the same time, the program helps students prepare for professional pathways in education, whether you’re drawn to teaching, advocacy, or other education-related careers. The Educational Studies Minor gives you a structured yet flexible way to explore how education shapes individuals and society. Drawing on disciplines like anthropology, sociology, philosophy, psychology, and history, students study education from multiple perspectives. Many develop strong foundations in civic literacy and social justice, while also preparing for practical careers.

Gettysburg College is an approved teacher education program by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and offers teacher certification in the following areas: As teachers and scholars, Gettysburg College faculty continually hone their teaching practices to fully engage their students in academic exploration. Gettysburg College has recently received a $15,900 collaborative grant from the Central Pennsylvania Consortium (CPC) to support faculty enrichment and education for navigating technology use in the classroom. Funding provided by the grant supports an educational initiative titled “Cultivating Attention and Engagement: Navigating Technology Use in the Liberal Arts Classroom.” The project is a collaboration between Gettysburg College and Franklin & Marshall... East Asian Studies Prof. Junjie Luo, who directs Gettysburg’s Johnson Center for Creative Teaching and Learning (JCCTL), said the grant has supported multiple activities and workshops surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and its challenges and opportunities for teaching and...

“The classroom lies at the heart of teaching and learning at Gettysburg and is an important part of the liberal arts education experience,” Luo said. “With the support of this grant, the JCCTL can offer more opportunities for participants to engage in discussions about emerging trends in classroom teaching and learning, particularly those related to technology use. By drawing on collective wisdom, these efforts contribute to enriching the classroom experience for faculty and students.” During the winter break, Luo and Lee Franklin, a professor of philosophy and interim director of the Faculty Center at Franklin & Marshall, co-organized a well-attended workshop on digital distraction. This spring, the grant will support learning circles that will allow faculty from both colleges to collaborate on topics related to classroom technology.
